I WAS THERE
(My answer to the song, “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?”)

I thought it was a strange question, at first. They asked me if I was there when they crucified the Lord? Me? There? But that was so long ago. How could I have been there? I wasn’t even born yet!

Was I there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh, I can imagine the excruciating pain of having spikes in your hands and feet. I’m afraid of needles.

Was I there when the blood came streaming down? I would have looked away. I can’t stand the sight of blood.

Was I there when they laid Him in the tomb? I’ve always felt sorry for this innocent man who had to die such a cruel death. If I was there, I would have tried to help Him.

Was I there when He rose up from the grave? How could one rise from the dead? Who was this man anyway? Could he somehow be God? I wondered…

Then I heard the real reason that He was put on the cross. It was for my sin! He hung there for me. He took my punishment, so that I could be free. He even did it willingly. The mocking, the beating, the spitting—even death itself. He chose to do it because of His love for me.

Yes, I was there when they crucified my Lord! I was there, not in body, but He saw my face; He knew my name.

I was there when the blood came streaming down. I even ventured to wash myself in that precious blood. When I did, it cleansed me.

I was there when they laid Him in the tomb. I wept as I thought of Him dying for me. But it was through this same death that I was given Life.

Yes, I was there at the cross! I was there, and you were, too. I was there when He rose up from the grave! He destroyed Death—my worst enemy. He rose to show His Almighty power. He is alive! Jesus is alive! Because He Lives, I shall Live, also.

MY SAVIOR LIVES AND I KNOW IT. I WAS THERE. WERE YOU?
