Darcy skipped along the dirt road home from school. She ran her hand on the rough stonewall along the side of the road.

About half way down the length of the wall, she noticed a large gray stone at the base of the wall. Kneeling down, Darcy saw a wet substance resembling tears leaking from the stone. "Why are you crying?" she asked.

"I am the middle stone in the base of the wall," the stone began. "I absorb most of
the weight. This burden is so heavy it is unbearable. It hurts so badly." The stone sobbed more.

"I'm so sorry," Darcy said. Pulling a hanky from her pocket she wiped away the stone’s tears.

"Oh thank you," sighed the stone.

"You're welcome," Darcy answered. And smiling, she made her way down the road.

The very next day, Darcy was once again coming down the road. Upon arriving at the stonewall, she once again notice that the stone was sobbing. "Why are you crying?" she asked.

"Because it hurts so much to bear this heavy burden," the stone cried.

"Let me help you," Darcy said. Reaching down, she twisted, turned and pulled until she freed the big stone from the wall.

"Ahhhh," the stone sighed. "Thank you so much. That feels so much better."

"You're welcome," Darcy said smiling. And she skipped on down the road.

The next day as Darcy made her way down the dirt road; she once again found the stone sobbing. "Now why are you crying?" she questioned.

"I'm not good for anything," the stone sobbed. "I'm too big to be on top of the wall. There’s only room for small stones up there." Darcy glanced up at the top of the
wall." And the wall won't stand for very long without my support," the stone continued. "Nobody is building a fence, a wall, or a house. I have no purpose."

"Let me help you," Darcy said, replacing the stone into the wall.

"Oh thank you," the stone sighed. "It's nice to be needed."

"You're welcome," Darcy said smiling, and went on her way.

A few days later, Darcy was once again going past the wall. And once again, she saw the stone sobbing. "Now why are you crying?" she asked.

"The wall is so heavy. It hurts so much to hold it," the stone sobbed. Perplexed, Darcy scratched her chin. Suddenly she had an idea.

Scanning the ground, she found 2 rocks smaller than the sobbing stone. Adjusting the position of the stone, she placed one rock on either side of it, wedging them tightly together.

"Ahhh. Thank you," the stone sighed. "That feels so much better.

"You're welcome," Darcy said cheerfully and continued on her way.

The next day and every day thereafter, Darcy walked down the dirt road along the wall. But she never saw the stone sobbing again.
