Have you ever been apprehended by fear because you didn’t understand something, and therefore rejected it because of trepidation of the unknown? It’s not hard to imagine the group of people in the surrounding region mentioned in Luke 8:37 who asked Jesus to depart from them because they were seized with great fear. Because of this, Jesus got into a boat and left. Fear caused them to miss seeing their Savior for who He really was. They could not accept Him because they were blinded by fear, deafened by the enemy of mankind that did not want them to understand the truth. What had Jesus done that so alarmed them? How did such great terror capture their minds?
There were hundreds of so called saviors in Jesus’ day that made great claims. Yet only the true Son of God could perform such great miracles like feeding a great multitude with a few loaves and fishes and raising a man’s daughter from the clutches of death. The crowds marveled as Jesus poured out mercy upon the sick and fed the hungry. Yet when Jesus encountered a naked man who was living in a cave and had known no normal life, they were afraid when Jesus freed this man from his affliction. Jesus’ powerful authority was brought to bear upon Satan as He cast out a legion of demons setting the man free.
The man’s lunacy had become normal and the people were frightened by the mighty workings of God to restore his intended life. Is there a part of Jesus you can’t see and have rejected because of the fear of something you don’t understand? I encourage you not to be like those who close their minds to the majesty of the Master’s miracles. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Let this be the Jesus you open your heart to daily who has true authority and power in your life.
