What is the Big Deal About Sin?

First we need to understand what sin really is. Sin is rebellion against God. In order to understand this we need to dig a little deeper. Unless we can grasp a few things then sin won’t seem such a big deal.

You may say well what God calls sin is fun and enjoyable. God did say that sin has pleasure for a season but afterwards will bring forth death. Sure many things can kill us in this life so why not go having some fun?

Do you realize that you are more than what you think? God created you as a spirit living in a body with a mind. You have a spiritual nature that you probably won’t recognize until you are saved or born again. God is a spirit and we are made in His image. Our true self is a spiritual self where our spirit man runs the show instead of our flesh or carnal man. God made us that way whether we want to believe or accept this as true.

Scripture says that sin is of the devil and that he sinned from the beginning. The devil or Lucifer was a beautiful creation of God. He decided that he wanted to be like God. He wanted to be the creator and run the show. That is rebellion. He decided that he knew better than God although God had created him. Sound familiar maybe like a child of yours? You brought them into this world yet they think with their limited experience of life that they know best? You as a parent would want the best for your child. The child maybe sees only what they want without the ramifications later on of having this. We are in the same boat concerning God. God knows what is best for us. He designed us that way. The best for us is God’s way and will. Even though we decide what we think is good for us sometimes it really is bad.

When we decide that we know best we are actually in agreement with what the devil did. When an all knowing God made us and knows what is best for us, doesn’t this maybe help us to understand why God calls things sin? We have chosen our own way regardless of the fact that it may kill us physically or spiritually. We are going by our emotions or feelings rather than what God said to be true. We are walking in the devil’s camp.

God made us so that our true life comes by the spirit. By the spirit we are fulfilled and complete. No matter the surroundings or what we have or don’t have we can be very content, full of joy, and happy. When we yield to our flesh or carnal nature, we may find some enjoyment but it can never compare with what the Lord has in store for us. Unless you have experienced true peace and joy then you cannot really understand what truly is available. Many have lived the lie and all the substitutes. They bought in to what the devil tried to do to Jesus when he was tempted of the devil after forty days in the wilderness. The devil told him that he would give him the whole world if he would just worship him. Jesus is the Son of God. There was no temptation there at all as He already knew where and what life really was. I think often of the scripture that says O taste of the Lord and see that He is good. Once we get a taste of the real then the false no longer has any hold.

The big deal about sin is that it is a substitute for what God has for us. It is walking in agreement with the devil and thinking you know better than God. It is rebellion. The reason that God says that they that are in the flesh cannot please him is that in the flesh we are in rebellion against him. We are saying to the one that made us that we know better. It is rather funny in a way. We tell the one that is all knowing and that had the smarts to make mankind that we know better. Oh has the devil deceived and lied to us. Oh how we are so blind and allowed him to do this. This is why the Word says, when we know the truth the truth will set us free. Here are a few truths:
1. There is a devil and he came to kill, steal, and destroy us
2. We are a spirit, soul, and body
3. It is the Spirit that gives life, not our flesh
4. God is a good God and desires good things for us and can only cause them to happen when we submit to him and serve him with our whole heart

Why is one sin not worse than another? The real reason goes to the root cause. All sin is based in rebellion and disobedience. It is our wanting our own way. It is looking at temporal pleasure rather eternal placement with God. He desires for us to rule and reign with Him in eternity. How can he allow this if we are rebellious and disobedient to him now? We are putting our self in the same place that the devil did. While on earth we should be learning that God’s ways are far above anything that the devil has to offer. Once we learn this then submitting to God and allowing Him to be Lord become much simpler for us. We know that God is the best thing going. We know that no matter what it is, if it is God, we want it. This is why when we sin or are in the flesh that we cannot please God. He has something better in mind for us. We all were created for something. Yet until we get out of our flesh and draw near to Him we will never know what God has in mind for us. He wants to give us life abundant not just temporal pleasure.
