Luke 7:13
KJV - And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
NIV - When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said "Don't cry."
There is much to be said for Christian joy, and among the best examples in the Bible is the story of restoring life to the son of the widow of Nain. Neither she nor the son are mentioned by name, but what occurred in this obscure little village is a source of joy to all believers in Christ. Many followers of Christ were happy, awed by His presence, but tradition required that funeral processions be joined out of respect, much like we pull over when a funeral procession passes along the way. It was a particularly sad procession as the widow's only son was her source of livelihood. She thought she was alone in her despair.
I read this morning in my brief research that the word for "compassion" used in this case is like the word in the parable of the Good Samaritan. It goes far beyond feeling sorry, but a commitment to take action. That is exactly what Jesus does. He sees our needs, He knows our anguish, and He acts on our behalves - constantly and forever.
We too need to have compassion for others that exceeds well wishes but leads to actions out of love. We also learn that earthly conditions are superceded with eternal joy. We hear now the words of our Savior, " Weep not."
There is too much going on in the world to be moping around. We can choose to be going in with the happy crowd of Jesus's followers, or going out with the mourners. Like the crowd that saw that blessed miracle that day - the young man brought back to life, the joy of the widow to see her son alive, and the glory of God so real and present. We should be teeming with joy!
