New King James Version (NKJV)




7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.




Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters,

Some years ago the famous slogan," What would Jesus do?" went around the world in religious and non-religious communities which has stirred up the question in my mind," What would Jesus do in racist America?" I do realize that there are many people who believe we live in a post racial America since we have an African American president however; I do believe the facts and statistics reveals that America is not close to being post racial and in reality America may never achieve such grandiose sentiments. The above scripture text reveals that Jesus Christ did in fact live with racism which existed among the Samaritans and the Jews. Can racism be overcome and ministry of the Kingdom occur in a society that is racially divided? The answer is yes...absolutely! Look how the ministry of the Kingdom unfolds...Jesus ask the woman of Samaria for a drink of water and she replies," “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans." The woman is surprise that Jesus being a Jew and at the time Jews were thought of as being superior to Samaritans would make a request or need something from her.... a Samaritan and a woman. Yes, in those times not only did they have racial discrimination but gender discrimination as well...much like today. Jesus did not allow her race or gender to prohibit him from ministering the Kingdom of God to her...in fact there is only one race in the Kingdom and that is the human race. Every race and ethnicity...every gender...every person needs the gift of God which is being offered to the woman of Samaria. So what would Jesus do in racist America? He would offer the people living water(Holy Spirit),and eternal life....,"whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” That is what Jesus would do....The question now is... what will you do?
