Professing is making an open declaration or affirmation of a belief, or to lay claim to, or practice something. We see many people, by this dictionary definition, professing to be Christians. But for many, that is as far as it goes. There is the practice of attending church, Bible reading, prayer and other religious disciplines. All of this is fine and necessary, of course, but in the midst of all of this what is it that people lay claim to, or declare, or affirm?

The answer to these questions is the determining factor as to whether one truly is saved, and that lies not in what one professes.

Romans 10:9-10 tells us "That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved, for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation." This teaching is reinforced in I John 4:2 and 15. These verses tell us that we must CONfess that Jesus is the Son of God, God in the flesh.

This is the earmark of a true believer. Anything short of that misses the point, and is nothing but PROfession, in an outward form of practice.
