Oh, God, don't You know
How hard you make it for me
To believe in You?
You could easily display
Your might, grandeur, holiness
With laser shows and sound effects;
Evil -doers quickly routed
Into the abyss.
Instead, You speak
In a still, small voice
Forcing me to listen closely,
Look for Your reflection within creation,
Search constantly, diligently in Your word,
Holding on to faith
Only by Your grace.


Oh, God, don't You know
How difficult You make it for me
To trust in You?
How much simpler it would be
If every prayer
Was answered immediately,
Every need provided temporally.
No contemplating, no debating.
Instead, You pause...
Forcing me to wait on You
To rethink my wants, my attitude.
Sometimes You even say "No"
With no explanation,
Forcing me to bow
To Your sovereignty.


Oh, God, don't You know
How much work it takes
To love You
With my whole heart,
My entire mind and spirit?
How much more effortless
To love You more than
Chocolate, Diamonds, and shopping
But maybe just a little less
Than sleeping late on weekends.
But no, You require first place
In my desires, my thoughts
and my deeds.
A love like that
Could be all-consuming!


Oh, God, I know You know
How easily distracted
Preoccupied, and spastic
We mortals can be.
"Seek", Your word bids
"And you shall find"
The One who left all heaven behind,
Relentlessly pursuing
His wayward bride.
Lord, grant that we, with all devotion,
Steadfast hearts, and true emotion,
Fix our hearts and minds on You
Who, knowing the cost,
Still followed it through...
With His personal sacrifice.
