When you hear that title, what does it make you think of? Some exciting night in your life, where something incredible happened and you will remember it the rest of your life. That is exactly what I mean by that. You probably think of your Wedding Day, or when you had your children. Those are definitely days to remember. This one is a little different. Yet a night to remember. It was not an exciting day, actually one of dread. My Mom had to go in the hospital to have a wire replaced for her defibulater. We asked the doctor when they put it in the first time if it was one of the recalled ones. He says Oh no, she was getting the best. A couple years later here we are going to the hospital. I’m sure God has His reasons for allowing things like that to happen and maybe that night occurred for me. I am forever changed by that night.
When Mom goes in the hospital, we always get a little nervous. Her heart is weak and we know that everyday with my Mom is a gift from God. She has scared us more than a few times, so it is natural for us to dread it. I know that she does. God is so faithful and He has spared her numerous times and continuously heals her body.
We went in that morning and everything went as planned. One of the best hospital stays she has ever had. She had to stay the night so they could watch her after shocking her heart. She was able to talk and sit up and eat, but we always stay close by in case she needs us. We also had the death of a precious friend during that same time. Since she was doing so well, everyone decided to go to the funeral home and I stayed with Mom.
The last time I had stayed with Mom, she had a heart cath. Normally, a very routine procedure, but that night she began to bleed again. She told me she heard a pop and thought she was bleeding. Silly me, gets up to look at the bandage. Wasting time, while the bandage is being submerged in blood, I ran to the door and yelled, “She’s bleeding!” By that time the blood was shooting. She was supposed to go home earlier in the day, but the doctor knew there was trouble keeping that vein closed, so he decided to keep her. If they had sent her home as planned she would have bled out because at that time, I didn’t know how to put pressure on that vein. I do now!
They pushed me into the waiting room and said they would come get me. I went into that room with my body doing this uncontrollable jerking. I called the family and told them to pray. They wanted to come, but I told them to wait and see if they got the bleeding stopped first. It was a horrible night. It left me traumatized. I sat in that chair and could not even pray. All I could think about was if she was going to be okay. Absolutely horrible when you think you might lose your Mom. After 30 minutes I went to check on her. They sent me back. That made it worse. 30 Minutes later I went back saying I had to know. She was fine and they let me in. They were still working on cleaning her up, but they let me in and said, “Oh it was no big deal.” EXCUSE ME? I was just thankful she was fine. I told my sister. No more first nights for me! She’s all yours.
I ate my words. Only because she was doing so well. We sat there that night and talked for hours and hours. We talked about family and relationships. We talked about what wonderful things God was going to do in our family. We read devotions and she told me what she thought some of our ministries were. We never watched TV. I just sat there and soaked up all of her wisdom. The kind of thing you don’t do when you are young and life is so busy. As she talked, I took in every word. My Mother is a very Godly woman and she has always been my mentor. I have said if I am ever a blessing to anyone, it is because God used a Godly mother to teach me His ways. She has shown me treasures in His Word. She has uncovered golden nuggets that can only be understood from spending time in God’s presence and studying His Word.
Am I putting my Mom on a pedestal? Yes I am. She has earned that place in my life with the commitment she has given to God. I have never seen a love for God like my Mother has. I know it is out there in other ladies, but I have witnessed it first hand with my Mom. She has the purest heart that I know and protects it. She will not let just anything enter in. As I sat in my chair at the foot of her bed, I thought I could do this all night. I didn’t want it to end.
Now don’t get me wrong. I go to my parents for everything. I mean everything. I go and sit with them and get a lot of advice and guidance from them. So it’s not like I have never listened to her before. I have matured enough to know that I must soak up all the time with my parents that I have.
This night was just special. We were all alone with no distractions except an occasional nurse checking on her. My mind goes to the thought of sitting at Jesus feet. I thought of how I should spend more time at the feet of Jesus. I can sit and talk to Him the same way I sat there with my Mom. I can soak up His presence and His wisdom. I can be forever changed each and every time I sit at His feet. He enjoys our company and He longs to pour out His peace and comfort. Guidance, Wisdom, Joy. All the same things an earthly Mother longs for us to have, just a trillion times more so.
I will never forget the words my Mom said to me that night. I believe they were the words that God knew I needed to hear. He used my Mom that night. In her pain and discomfort, He used her to minister to me. At this point in my life, that is one of the most precious gifts God could ever give me. I enjoy fun just like everyone else, but I also know a moment in time that is absolutely priceless.
I thank God for my parents who have raised me in a Godly environment and trained me up in the way I should go. I often say that I live in a bubble. I am thankful for that bubble. My parents helped show me how to create it. That bubble is the Holy Spirit. I have to live in this world, but not be a part of it. My bubble is my protection from this old world. My Mom thinks I can write a book. With her guidance and God’s wisdom, I probably will. All things are possible! Who knows maybe I will call it A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!
I love you Mom and Dad! Thank You for being You!

What a beautiful tribute to your parents and to God. Feelings expressed here are so needed in this generation of "Me me me" Thank-you for expressing this so beautifully. Even though my parents are with Jesus now, I think back of many beautiful times to remember. Great job of expressing true love and admiration.
