The Word for Writers
The heart, oft misunderstood, discouraged in business affairs, lauded in children, trusted by the confident, scorned by the soldier, doubted by the scientist, shared among lovers, remains one the most versatile, descriptive words in ancient and modern language. One needs observe nothing more than idle communication between men to prove this fact. While one speaks of following his heart another insists it cannot be trusted. In the heat of the fight, in the interest of self-preservation, the hardened soldier dare not allow his heart a voice. Yet Jesus Christ himself reveals the ideal condition of humility to be found in the heart of a child. So, what then is this multifarious concept refusing to be characterized by one phrase or two? Who is this highly sought after friend that promises to reveal us to ourselves and indeed every other man to us also? Perhaps nature, cleverly provided by God for just such explanations, can portray heart’s meaning best. The heart is to a man what the molten core is to the planet Earth. While the surface is beautifully suited, the power resides deep, deep within. The plant kingdom agrees also in that no matter how brilliant the colors and shapes of the flower, nourishment flows freely from the root. To hurt the flower, damage a leaf; to destroy the flower, damage the roots. The flesh of man testifies likewise. That small organ in the center of the chest, in the middle of the body, carries so great a life giving responsibility. If the life of the flesh is in the blood, then what monumental expectation is assigned the heart? Knowing neither day nor night, that fist sized, little pump keeps on pumping and God’s little man keeps on living. With minimal care and exercise the mighty organ stays on task, but begin to neglect it and surround it with the globules of excess and trouble follows fast. And if the mechanic continues to neglect the old machine, choked and stifled, it seizes and stops… In like manner, in the center of man’s mind, in the very depths of his soul, sits his truest mental heart. From it flows the mighty expectation, able to subdue the strongest enemy and fulfilling all conditions enlists the help of God.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10
From these depths comes health or disease, fortune or poverty, success or failure. Not because they pre-existed in the mind of the unsuspecting carrier, but rather because the unsuspecting carrier put them in his mind. The food that nourished the root, made the root feeble or sound. It is the surface revealing the buried, the outward manifesting the inward. Good thoughts moving at the speed of light, deliver life and bad thoughts in secret drag about their partial death. Let a man set about to right his thoughts and soon his sluggish heart becomes more lean. Let him stand upon his feet and lock the door to falsehood. Let him tightly latch the windows blocking the entrance of the unwanted wind. And while still inhaling the breath of purity, his soul shall rejoice.
