Truth
Truth is not the mere opposite of lies, but rather a declaration of what is and what is not. While circumstances change like gusts of wind and at times the sun shines while other times there’s clouds, truth stands unwavering, unyielding, unchanging forever. For most, the ruling force in life, in fact its dominant ethic, is expediency, that is to say what brings desire to pass in the most expeditious manner. Men seek truth as long as that truth agrees with their comfortable theology. It is easier to follow the path of water and go the way of least resistance. And for most the appearance of an obstacle immediately confirms their long held thought, this is not the way. Surely all that is good and right, all, which is sweet and beautiful, must come without challenge, without a fight. Many a soul has followed this cunningly devised path of error. The deceitfulness of riches has ensnared a thousand men. The apparent ease of ill-gotten gain, the promise of the effortless way, fruit from trees that have not been planted, a harvest where no seed was sown, all testify shamelessly with volume to the slippery, tempter’s claim, “truth is only true if it is true for you.” It has been said in this day that there is no good and evil, there is no wrong and right, but rather let every man decide what is right for him and from thence let him judge. Such thought is anarchy and denies with ignorance the Master’s plan. If what is, is and what is not, is not, who is man to kick against the pricks? The senses realm testifies of this truth. Let the disputer defy the laws of gravity. Let him climb to the highest peak and with solemn prayer and determined will cast himself headlong to the ground while clinging tightly to his creed, his inner thought, his private truth, namely, “gravity is not true for me.” And following his demise while laying lifeless on the heap in stillness will be heard - truth stands!
Truth exists timeless, knowing neither night nor day. Truth has no beginning and knows no end. The creation itself was formed upon its speech. Truth framed the world and determined aforetime order and precision. Yet many scoff and chide and choose rather to embrace the theories, and without shame succumb to popular opinions. Whether it is easier to believe that our perfect globe, balanced, and symmetrical in every way came from a violent explosion-bang…or to follow truth’s account of Love’s most loving plan, you decide. Or worse, stand with hands on hips, head shaking, from exalted position and claim the story of Adam and Eve too simplistic, while defending with pompous righteousness another’s tale that man evolved from ape. Even the thoughtless primate would feign hold back his laugh.
In the courts of life truth is tried and without benefit of barrister comes out unscathed. Whether there be ten thousand accusers, all men cheated of this or that; truth remains confident and innocent. Never has truth defrauded man of his just claim, never has truth suppressed, never has truth held back his rightful due. Maligned and misunderstood truth stands pure. Let a man cease from his complaints, let him change his inward view and instead seek higher than himself. Let him fix his gaze upon the perfect and perfection will come to his aid. Let him in silence think, what does the scripture say? Let him step down from the marbled column he has built upon his own intelligence. Let him disassemble the wall that pride helped prepare and once again experience the humility of youth. For He hath said:
For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9
Therefore it would seem sensible for a man to discontinue with himself, his pride, his desperate clutching to his error and instead seek for the law upon which his soul was built. Truth is…
The mind of man was artfully crafted to house with perfect ease, this truth. Man’s discomfort comes not from the dictates of truth but rather the conflict that arises as he seeks to dismantle the other. The furious battle that besieges his soul is the last ditch stand of error, holding to its prior claims. Indeed the stalwart obstacle, the rugged mountain of resistance comes not from what is, but rather from what is not. The light absent its brightness is become dark, the warmth deprived of heat is become frigid cold. The supple heart deprived of love fills with hatred instead. Yet while truth seeks to dole out her wisdom and bestow her prize with knowledge, he curses the God who formed him and rejects His merciful plea. It cannot be, he whines, and suffers more and more. But still, truth sits with unchanged face ever promising a better course. To test this truth is quite simple. Travel to the deepest core of the earth, or better the ocean floor, or better still the depths of space and embrace the thick, bleak darkness that surrounds you. Yet a flame from the smallest match, a flicker insignificant and small commences with manful authority to chase the legions of darkness to their hiding place. And while the tiny flame remains, all darkness must stay out. The same holds true for the soul of man. Let him set about with patience to make his house from time tested brick. Let him build in earnest an edifice strong and sure. Only let him make doubly sure that his material be composed of fibers reaped from the fields of truth. He should set his tractors and machinery to mine the quarry of eternity rather than dig the fleeting opinions of a few famous men. Does not even the most grand of men come, then go and we remember them no more? Yet truth remains, the living for the dead.
Truth is the illumination of men. It shines through the dense fog of imagination and clearly marks the way. Even the most cunning darkness, armed with six hundred subtle lies cannot extinguish this glorious torch. So then, men should make it their aim to utter these javelins of light. Wherever darkness holds sway, wherever misery is supreme, wherever the cold and the hungry live, speak! Speak forth with conviction, stand upright and proclaim to the truth-starved world what is right. Shout it from the housetops, to him and him and her. To mother, guest and teacher, to brother, friend, and wife – herald forth. Listen not to the gainsayer, the intellectual, and the boss. Shield and cover the ears from the philosopher, the lawyer, and the scientist. Know and understand instead. Allow the warm gentle rays of honesty to run headlong into every corner. Let every false word drop from view and gather in earnest each sparkling jewel truth hands out.
For what is the life of a man but to know Him and search out His will for all? Why remain submerged in the boggy mud when the crystal fountain spurts nearby? And why continue to crawl in the trenches with hard, worn ruts when the highway is so close?
Truth is pure and free from every foreign admixture. Unlike a garment washed of soil and stain, bleached and beaten till the whiteness returns, truth retains its polished luster refusing tarnish that comes from time and neglect. Although unheard, untouched, unused for a million years, truth sparkles and glistens and shines whenever its simple voice is heard, as if for the very first time. Truth in whatever form it takes, whether in the pristine beauty of undisturbed nature, or in the precision of a complex mathematical formula, or even spoken forth from the courageous lips of a well learned and practical minister, is always sweet and life giving to the soul of man. While bearing the unequaled and unparalleled perfection of its author, truth is able to heal the wounds bringing soundness to the flesh and mind. With that same perfection comes the power to wash and bathe and cleanse away all wickedness and filth that soils the heart, bringing instead regeneration and newness of life. Then man is able to commence thought as God intended for a man to think. His mind, unfettered, unchained and unencumbered is quick and lively, ready to act. Melodic, soothing melodies play quietly in the inner chambers and replace the noisy, outer din of confusion. In his newfound liberty, the man is able to minister compassion and looks well to the needs of his brother, while delighting in the absence of his former strife. Armed with pure light he is made to stand upon his feet, no longer cowering in fear and uncertainty. His lungs fill with air, his shoulders reach back, his head assumes its manful posture. His eyes open wide and reveal like picture windows the blissful meadow, full of pretty flowers and flowing grass, which is now his secret thought. His skin, once dry and stretched takes on a youthful form. The years of toil and stress and strain drop from his brow. Truth has entered his soul and truth has set him free.
John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Truth is the supreme critic able to masterfully and with surgical precision separate the wheat from the chaff, the sheep from the goats, the true from the false. Consider the sinister magician ever working his illusions and cleverly deceiving the sense knowledge learner. The human eye is no match for his craft, but the wisdom from above has never been fooled. This wisdom that before the world was focuses with spiritual acuity and is able to see the end. All of the costumes, all of the facades, all of the disguises are swiftly shed aside revealing the true essence of the thing. Then, where is the fear, where is the terrible fate that threatens us? Where is the dreadful circumstance? Where is the promised calamity? Truth calmly whispers, it is not here… for it was never here, but that it might reveal itself as the lie it always was. Yet man continues to scurry frantically around the globe, running from this and sprinting to that. Blown about with every chance gust of wind, never sure, never solid, never quite able to tell. He falls prey to every huckster, ever watching never learning, always listening never hearing. Relying on the unreliable, trusting in his senses might, man marches on. But, the man alone is to be blamed. For, the Creator of the heavens and the earth made man a little lower than Himself, appointed him royalty and clothed him with part of His very own. And for him sculpted a masterpiece in the stars and commanded man to heed their clarion call. And with man’s agreement or in his bullish opposition, the heavens cannot help but utter what they have seen and heard, nights and days without end.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Psalms 19:1-3
What then is the point of all this discourse? Is it to sit smugly in the juror’s seat and swear by truth to defend the truth, so help me God? I think not. Rather it needs be said what should have always been said. Man without truth sinks to the depths of his most savage, animal urge and with truth rises like hot air to the summit. Let man gather unto himself all that he can carry. Let him fill his heart and soul with every precept, every promise, every line. Let him cease from the lauded and popular way and run headlong against the crowd, into the wind, against the grain until his soul finds that which it has always sought. Then will the noisy crowd hush, then will the strong wind cease, then will the grainy rough soften for then and only then will he at last be able to say with indescribable and never before experienced sweetness:
Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy
and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by Thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
Jeremiah 15:16
