An Explosive New Year
The game was over, and the fans began to file out. Seconds later mysterious, two all black-colored, unidentified helicopters rapidly descended toward the fifty yard line.
Immediately after, both the helicopters ejected deadly cylindrical-shaped projectiles straight down.
Loud screams pierced the January NE Wisconsin air. Thousands of fans scurried to find the least congested exit. Swiftly, one helicopter shot up and shifted straight towards the south end of the Packer Stadium at a forty-five degree angle.
The crowd divided, like a million cells in mitosis. High pitched sounds extended the New Year celebration–but with a disaster. No one in Green Bay would have expected this. Just to think, just five years before major television evangelists had warned everyone that Green Bay needed to shape up.
Minutes later, firefighters rushed in, pushing their way into the crowd of escaping masses, armed with hoses. Like machine guns they aimed, and gutted out two open pit fires, where minutes later torpedoes were launched. Police from Green Bay, and Surrounding villages arrived shortly afterwards, along with ambulances, all asserting their way through with sirens.
Miraculously, no one was killed, unlike the tragedy on September 11, 2001, however, hundreds were bruised, burnt, and scarred. Some casualties were “friendly fire” within the football stadium, as frightened fans fought their way out of the circular prison.
Some fans seemed totally oblivious to the fact that a bombing had taken place, while others stole from the unattended beer and concession stands. They had drank so much that they had to be wheeled out on stretchers, and were the first to be checked for pulses.
“Talk about crying wolf!” One rescue worker said, very disgusted with humanity at the moment.
People were still pushing and shoving. The helicopters darted out as fast as they reeled in. Soon, they were no bigger that the size of an eye. Later, channel five broadcasted the “bomb scare” almost word for word as it happened. It made a lot of people wonder. How did they know so much so fast? But some people just argued, reporters are always quick on these things. It’s no different that having the police or the rescue teams, rushing in. They provide a service just like anyone else.
Nora tuned into the broadcast, just after it had started.
“...were descending from the sky at what seemed to be mock speed. One missile was shot straight down on the packer’s stadium’s fifty yard line, while the other missile was shot as a 45 degree angle toward the south end of the stadium. People scattered in all directions, and fire erupted from both places where the projectiles hit.
"So far, 300 people are reported injured, over half which, believe it or not, have nothing to do with the ‘bomb scare’–so called the bomb scare, by the way, because more people were mentally injured with acute anxiety , than physically injured or killed. Now, reporting live, with Robert Norton.”
Nora’s T.V. screen panned in to the casualty scene, with hundreds of people still standing around, some appearing to be praying, others crying, many others rushing to their automobiles.
Robert began to confirm the severity of the damage done to both the stadium and the people in it.
“The south end of the stadium was smoke damaged, the fifty yard line looks like a fire pit. Bleacher benches are toppled over, and one missile is stuck nose first into the pavement between two bleachers. The impact of the weapon used created a crevice, much like one caused by a minor earthquake. For safety reasons, obviously no one except the police and rescue teams are allowed in the stadium at this time. Everyone else has nearly evacuated. I have a few people standing by that would like to share what’s on their hearts."
One lady, who did not want her name revealed, talked but was not shown in the camera told how she felt. “I never thought it would happen in a little city like Green Bay. You hear about this kind of stuff in New York, or Oklahoma city, or L.A., but not little Green Bay.”
The reporter spoke again, on a screen displayed in the Channel five newsroom. “The obvious question remains, Cathy. And that is whether or not this was connected in any way with the Sept. 11th tragedy three years ago.”
“You’re right, Robert. I suppose many people still wonder of the Oklahoma city bombing and the dramatically less severe World trade Center Bombing in _______ were all connected to this event to day as well. “
Robert answered on the screen to Cathy. “I have a man here, who has been waiting to speak. Sir, do you think that this bombing today was connected with Osama bin laden, and/or the Oklahoma City bombing in some way in directly or directly?”
The middle-aged man, with a partially receding hairline and packer jacket replied, rubbing his beard, as if to signal he is deep in thought. “Of course there is no way to know for sure, exactly until all the...” the man chuckles nervously, and continues, “.I was tempted to call them names I shouldn’t say on television.”
Robert the reporter chuckled.
Then the man resumed, “there really is know way to know for sure until all the people involved in those incidences are caught, and I hope when they do, they are executed. We don’t go around bombing other people just for the fun of it, why should we? I take that back, I know that it isn’t just fo the fun of it, but it still makes me mad and scares even the tar off my blacktop driveway!”
The end of the news report ended with the star-spangled banner.
That night, when Cathy came home from the station, she could hot sleep. She always thought of Green Bay apart from the few wanna-be gangs, and usual violence, and prostitution that most cities, even those of only a hundred thousand people, contend with, as a moderately safe place to live. As a reporter, she new the condition of Breen Bay, but maybe the city was worse off than she thought.
Then she remembered God. She remembered how they said on Sept. 11th that “We will never forget”. What they should have glorified is not the tragedy so much, but to remember what God had done through it all. Of course, she realizes that many people lost love ones in that incident.
She did as well. She lost her husband. She was so grateful that her friend Judy had not lost Daryl, though. She remembered how distraught Judy was, to the point of almost committing suicide. If she would have, she and Daryl wouldn’t have celebrated their 8th anniversary this past August, 2004.
She wondered what all that meant, everything that happened in Green Bay that evening. She wondered how people would react to all this. Would it draw them closer to God? Or further away from God?
