It seems these days that as soon as we switch the radio or the television on, or open a newspaper we are confronted with lurid accounts of terrorism and bloodshed somewhere in the world. Whereas at one time we would be shocked at the violence that surrounds us, and with the death toll that mounts day by day, we are becoming conditioned to accept as the norm an unstable and violent world.

But why should it be like this? After all, it is clear that war, whether on a global scale or on the streets, will never provide a lasting solution. In the twentieth century we fought two world wars and were active in several major skirmishes, where many lives were lost, and others maimed. And yet we still live in a world that is fraught with danger and uncertainty, where at any moment any one of us could be caught up in some random act of terrorism.

What mankind desperately needs is the chance to find true peace, to be rid, once and for all, of the chatter, the noise, and the need to keep looking over one’s shoulder for fear of attack. Fear and worry wastes precious time – peace, on the other hand, puts us out of reach of the dangers of the world’s negativity.

But above all, the chance to live with peace and silence is a thing to be truly cherished in a society scarred by so much noise and turmoil. So it is up to us – we can choose to live this day in a frantic state of confusion, or focus instead on the spiritual joy of peace and friendship. In peace can be found beauty, purpose and determination, and if you elect to follow that path you will feel the power this can bring you, and understand just how rich and rewarding life can be.

Sadly, there seems to be little time to seek out peace, but with a positive outlook it can come, and with it the opportunity to live in the spirit of love and friendship. So, go on, empty your mind of those stressful thoughts, and fill that space with an enduring calmness – then you will come to know that every action and every thought will move you towards that wonderful world of richness and fulfilment.
