Our agenda was running smoothly as I reached the truck. Yet, as I closed my hand around the door latch to open the door a voice cried out my name. I turned to see my neighbor and her 7-year-old son, Nathan, standing beside her. “Sarah,” she said, distress in her voice, “can you help us? My car won’t start. I think the battery’s dead and I don’t have any jumper cables. Do you have jumper cables?’
I sighed as I checked my watch. Oh no, not now. “Well, we’re headed to church right now,” I said not thinking how insensitive I sounded. Then an inner voice informed me my mission had changed; church would have to wait. “Well, hold on, let me see”, I said and heaved open the truck door and said to my husband. “Her car won’t start, thinks her batterie’s dead, asks if we have any jumper cables. Where are our jumper cables?”
“In the back seat. Come on, jump in, tell her we’ll be right down.”
A few minutes later we were parked beside her car.
With joyful enthusiasm they greeted us as we climbed out of our truck. “Oh, thank you,” she repeated. You two are so great helping us out like this. Nathan told me we should ask you guys for help. He said, “’Ask Steve and Sarah, they’ll help us. They’re like superheroes!”
I Laughed. “Superhero’s? Nathan, did you really say that?”
He smiled shyly and nodded.
It made me giggle as I imagined us, a gray-haired duo, wearing capes dashing here and there running to the rescue of people in need. Ahh, the wonderful imagination of a young boy. How inspiring.
Due to my husband’s expertise, a few minutes later the motor jumped to life and ran smoothly as he disconnected the jumper cables. “Well, there ya go, ready to roll. Let it run for a while before you turn it off. Give the battery a few minutes to charge.“
Although it seemed a menial task, we relished the sense of a job well done as we drove away, again, late for church.
But the joy on our neighbor’s faces was a more precious reward than a prompt arrival, a call for help more important than a schedule. What an honor it was to help full fill the hopes of people and see the joy in their eyes.
Our reward was much greater than just making it to church on time. It was being the heart and hands of Jesus if only for a moment.
Thank God for reminding me His agenda is far more significant than mine. Some things are much more important than we realize. Important matters veiled in a whisper.
