He stood at the window, looking out at the lawn, when there was a knock at the door. He turned as it opened,
“Ah. Welcome,” he said.
Politely he gestured to one of the sofas in the room, and folded his own tall frame onto a matching couch.
After the pleasantries were out of the way, he leaned forward, elbows on knees and quietly examined the man in front of him for a moment or two. “Our nation has been through so much. War and internal revolts have taken their toll,” he finally said.
His visitor nodded. “Yes Mr. President, I couldn’t agree more.”
The President flashed a quick smile, “So I intend to do something about it. I’ve been toying with an idea. Tell me what you think. We need to find a way to bring this fractured nation together. A way to celebrate our past, be thankful for our present and build excitement for our future.”
“That’s a hard row to hoe,” the Vice-President protested. “Tensions are running high. What do you suggest?”
The President stretched out his long legs, and sat back, head tilted to the ceiling. “Since the founding of this nation we’ve had various days that honor different things, but none of them cohesive. We need a day where we demonstrate our thankfulness to God, and to our nation. I suggest that we propose one day and make it a National Holiday. What do you think?”
His Vice-President stood and moved to the window, in much the same way the President had a few minutes earlier. With his back to the President he mused, “Not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all. One question? What day should we choose?”
“So glad you asked,” the President chuckled as he walked over to join his Vice-President. “I have the perfect day in mind. One that will appeal to our people of all walks of life, every tribe, race and tongue.”
“Seriously? I would think that is impossible. What day did you have in mind?” F. W. de Klerk looked over at Nelson Mandela.
“The 16th of December,” Mandela replied.
“Genius!” de Klerk responded. “Absolute genius!”
On the 16th of December 1995 the first official Day of Reconciliation, a day to foster unity, thankfulness, and harmony was celebrated.

This day was chosen as it was already a national holiday known as the Day of the Vow, when the Lord delivered the Voortrekkers (Pioneers) from Zulu attack in 1864. Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), part of the African National Congress (ANC), was founded on the 16th of December 1961. Their purpose was to fight racial inequality and injustice. With two significant events that affected all races in the country, this was the logical choice.
