Encyclopedia: You know, I know we were made to stand up tall, but once you get used to it, this whole lying flat thing isn’t so bad.
Thesaurus (all of Thesaurus’s lines are spoken as though he is struggling): Easy... for you to... say. Comment. Remark. You... aren’t... on the bottom... of the... pile. Tower. Heap.
Dictionary: At least I’m not the unabridged version.
Encyclopedia: Yeah, but you’re no pocket dictionary either.
Dictionary: Are you calling me fat?
Encyclopedia: No, it’s just that you’re very... prolific.
Dictionary (after a long pause): Uh... Thesaurus? Are you okay down there? You’ve been very quiet ever since we got put up here, and Encyclopedia handed you that one on a silver platter.
Thesaurus: Must... save... energy for... breathing. Respiration. Inhalation.
Encyclopedia: If we could move on our own power, we’d gladly change positions and let you be on top. I don’t know why they put you on the bottom anyway. You’re the smallest of us, and simple physics would tell you that for the greatest structural integrity, you should start with the largest piece and go to the smallest.
Dictionary: You’re calling me fat again, aren’t you?
Encyclopedia: No. You’re just very... solid.
Thesaurus (after a long pause): Solid. Sturdy. Firm.
Dictionary: He lives! (after a brief pause) How long has it been since we were sitting out on the table, in hopes of being used anyway? Five years? Ten?
Encyclopedia: Try about five months. It was the beginning of the school year.
Dictionary: What? It seems much longer than that. I’m not sure I can make it much longer like this.
Thesaurus: You’re one... to talk. Speak. Converse.
Dictionary: I’m sorry, Theo... Is it okay if I just call you “Theo?” I didn’t mean to make light of your situation.
Encyclopedia: Oh, burn.
Dictionary: What? I meant that seriously!
Encyclopedia: Well, it’s just that you said you didn’t mean to make light of the situation. And clearly, the two of us on Theo... I really do like that nickname, by the way. Hope you don’t mind. Anyway, the two of us laying on top of Theo is anything but light.
Dictionary: You keep calling me fat. I still can’t believe it’s only been a few months. Why must we keep lying here in freakish agony?
Thesaurus: I’m so miserable. Forlorn. Woebegone.
Encyclopedia: Wait a second. I think someone is coming!
Dictionary: Maybe we’re going to be used again! Or, at the very least, maybe she’ll put us back in our proper places, standing upright!
(A woman comes by with a feather duster and dusts the shelves, including the books, and quickly walks past, without moving them.)
All three: Or not.
Thesaurus: Negative. False.
Narrator: Our trio has once again been forgotten. Abandoned. Desert... Sorry about that. I’ve gotten carried away. Will our poor Knowledge Keepers ever be used again, or will they find themselves at the bottom of a donation pile? Tune in next time, for Episode 3 of Reference Point!

This story brought a smile to my face. My favorite character was the thesaurus word finder.
