Down, in Autumn’s loamy soil
Small tiny seeds are sown.
Down, into the darkest depths
Each faces death alone.
Through autumn gold, through winter freeze,
Through frost and ice and snow
The hidden seed in quiet rest
Lay out of sight, below.
Skeletal branches on the tree
Don early gown of green
And flowering early bulbs of spring
Delightfully are seen.
And then arrive the tulip bands,
Erect as soldiers, tall,
Red, orange, yellow, purple, pink
But I wait – most of all –
For a tiny favourite beauty
Of the most exquisite hue,
The colour of an azure sky
Small petals of bright blue.
From seed, the healthy shoots have thrust
And surged into the light.
They pushed and pushed in growing strength
And won the darkness fight.
They broke, in Spring, through earth’s dark crust
Only to testify,
That life abundant always springs
From those prepared to die.
Five tiny petals circle round a golden centre star
Petals of the richest blue, how wonderful you are.
Your numerous multiplying flower spreads rapidly apace
Thrilled to lay low upon the ground around the tulips base.
Oh humble flower, blue beauty,
You teach my heart a lot
And I gladly you remember
Sweet sweet forget-me-not.
