In so much they had shared;
They knew each other’s twists and trends
But now he’s running scared
His courage quite impaired.
Tomorrow is the wedding day
Arrangements are complete—
“Your last night free,” his mentors say,
“Tomorrow you’re dead meat”—
An outbreak of cold feet.
The whole night long he twists and turns
He breaks out in a sweat,
Counts sheep to banish his concerns
His mind all in a fret—
He wakes up wringing wet.
He looks dishevelled, hair askew
His bleary eyes all red
None know the nightmare he’s been through
The angst inside his head—
Today he’s to be wed!
He still has nightmares to this day
Of that despondent night—
The miseries mentors convey
That feeds perverse delight—
Their initiation rite.
The only cold feet he now knows
Are those he sleeps beside;
That girl who’d been his friend he chose
Despite his mentor’s guide
To be his loving bride.
