I was joined by daydream companions,
Who drifted through my mind
Like clouds moving and merging with others.
Childhood friends and I were flying downhill on sleds
And crashing into snow banks,
Where we blew puffs of air from reddened cheeks
To circle above us with the sound of our laughter . . .
Sitting at Thanksgiving dinner table with family,
A sense of belonging and being loved
Was as richly present as the aroma of the baked turkey . . .
Eyes focused on the director,
I stood on the second row of the risers
To sing with the college choir,
My heart overflowing with joyful praise to God . . .
Holding tightly to Dad’s arm,
I took measured steps down the aisle
To meet the tall young man in the front
Who watched me with love-filled eyes . . .
I saw our little son and daughter
Flying downhill on sleds
Before the picture shifted
To that of our grandchildren on sleds,
Holding their babies in front of them,
As they glided down a snow-filled path,
Their excited screams following them all the way.
As the fire flickered and died out,
I knew that. though my daydream companions
Had left for now, they would return
And bring many more with them.
