A paradise stocked with provisions for every need
Adam and Eve lived lives of leisure
Perfect health was granted them--
no stress, no problems, no worries until. . .
A slithering snake hissed poisoned words into Eve’s heart
Then Doubt, the daddy of dastardly deeds, like a puff of smoke
pollutes her mind--and she dares to question her Creator
Suddenly “enough” isn’t for this woman
who’s experiencing greed for the first time
She bites the forbidden fruit and tempts Adam to do the same
How could they have been so quick to disregard God’s one restriction?
Greed! . . .and the evil serpent slips away, smirking
From that moment on the quality of life for mankind was reduced
From His generous provisions to working the fields
From Eden’s bliss to weighted burdens
From peace-filled days to unending wars between right and wrong
Jealousy and anger enter Cain’s heart
and he kills his brother, Abel
All humans have been “less than” from the time Doubt
delivered its death to them
Less than content
Less than joyous
Less than loving
But. . .God had a plan
And one starlit night His Son’s glorious surroundings
were reduced to a lowly stable--
From angelic choirs to mooing cows
From heaven’s majesty to a dimly lit manger
From righteous royalty to humble humanness
Jesus came to serve, to teach and to love
But then. . . He was given a criminal’s punishment
Sentenced to death by those who didn’t want Him getting in their way
So then. . .our Savior hung from a crude cross
From the heights of heaven to the depths of hell for our sins
His sacrificial love broke the chains of death forever, once for all
What has history’s mistakes taught new generations
To trust our Creator and Redeemer
To love others more than ourselves
To give to others in need
To commit to love God with all our hearts, souls and minds
Will those He ransomed continue to trade His gift of grace
for flash-in-the-pan pleasures---that’s a diminished life
Will you feast from the banquet of God’s words
or starve from the fast food garbage of this world
Time is running out--choose wisely
