“Zarglibnief! Are you here?” He appears by my side, gentle eyes full of love and concern.
“I am always here, Dear One. That was quite a hit you took but I must advise you to keep your voice low. The battle is not over yet.”
I suppress a groan and glance at him out of the corner of my eye. “I see my last attempt to save her was unsuccessful. Are we switching tactics or victims?”
“I know your desire is to leave this kingdom but you must endure. Drenglena is not aware of the severity of her sickness. We must continue to fight, for she does not realize that the enemy is within her. Shield up, Dear One. She approaches.”
“Zarg, wait!” I tremble as I watch him vanish into the trees.
Her presence is felt before it is seen. She appears slowly, as if being conjured from my worst nightmares. Emerald eyes glare at me and the urge to scream is almost more than I can bear. “Well played, Velishobed. I half expected you to remain frozen in your earthen coffin. However did you regain enough strength to find your way out?”
I bristle, glancing at the towering oaks above me. “Obviously I was not alone.”
Drenglena slithers closer to my right shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper. “Nor am I. You have your hero. I’ve got one as well. It’s only a matter of time before I permanently vanquish you from this kingdom and nothing and nobody will have the power to stop me. Your days are numbered, sweetheart.”
A roach crawls from beneath the folds of her sleeves and an involuntary shiver runs up my spine. I suddenly realize how brisk the air has become and wish that I had been buried beneath a fur coat or a pair of gloves. I adjust the grip on my shield, breathing long and deep. I turn and face her as an equal, resisting the urge to call out the demon within her.
“Dren, we are on the same side.” I brush a lock of hair out of my eyes as I fight back tears. “We could stand together as friends instead of apart as enemies!”
“I was never your friend!” She roars. “Everything you hold dear is in my hands and unless you’ve forgotten, you are banished from my castle. You step one foot inside my walls and I’ll…”
“You’ll what? Feed me to your polar bear? Lock me in a frozen tower? When are you going to understand that our power is only as strong as He allows it to be? My Champion can be yours too if you give yourself to Him.”
She snarls at me, low and guttural like a cat about to strike its prey. “You are a brave one, aren’t you? Your “champion” is useless to me and I won’t have any part of either of you. You may have won this battle but be on your guard. I will not rest until I see you destroyed. Now get out of my kingdom!” A trail of ice follows her as she disappears into the forest.
“Do you want me to light her broomstick on fire? Cut off her hair?
I smile. “You know she doesn’t have a broomstick. Hello, Zarglibnief.” He wraps a massive wing around my shoulders. I lean in appreciatively. “What if her heart freezes before I find the cure? You know time is not on our side.”
“The situation is dire, yes.”
“What if she dies? Zarg, I have tried everything…” A silent tear drips down my cheek.
“I know your pain is real but remember this. You were my friend long before you were hers. No effort done in My Name is ever truly wasted. Good will prevail no matter the outcome. Have faith and believe.” He lifts me in his great talons and together we soar, gathering strength for the battle to come.
