Through a dense black fearful night?
Can you see the high waves buffet?
Can you feel spray’s angry bite?
Are your meagre slight resources
Draining on a dwindling course
As you try to battle onwards
As you strain hard at the oars?
Now see, One walks towards you
On a pathway firm and straight.
He’s the Master of the tempest,
Every wave He did create.
And through the screaming wind-force
His words of power soar:
‘Take courage now, for it is I,
Come, be afraid no more.’
To Peter, just that one word ‘Come’
Was full sufficiency:
When Jesus called he left the boat
To walk upon the sea.
With eyes firm fixed on Jesus’ face
All, all that he could see
Was his dear Saviour’s loving face –
Full trust, implicitly.
O howling wind, o fiercesome spray,
O how you tear that trust away?
My Saviour Lord unchanging
Treads still the storm tossed way
The Master of the tempest calls
Come trust me and obey.
He knows the destination
The path that He will take
Though it cross desert, mountain track
Or dark storm-ridden lake.
‘Will you obey and trust me
Even in darkest night
Until you hear my final ‘come’
When faith turns into sight.’
Can you hear the wild wind roaring
Through a dense black fearful night?
Can you see the high waves buffet?
Can you feel spray’s angry bite?
Oh yes I may, but this I pray
Treading an onward course
Teach me to always trust, obey,
And give to You my oars
