We’ll gather on the courthouse lawn, will you come--it’s the third of June”
My stomach did a flip-flop though my lips curved with a smile
“Well, I’ll have to check my calendar” --can I squeeze out of this with style
My gut says I cannot do this public display of saying prayers
My heart says “why not, we need it”--I’ll pray alone where no one stares
Later, at lunch I’m confronted again by the cheerleader for Jesus’ crowd
“Are you free, do you have your answer?” With a gulp my weak “yes” emerged unproud
Miss Cheery hugged me with intention, so pleased with my wimpy “yes”
Just wait, you’ll feel His presence as hearts open--and those praying, He’ll bless
I nodded with thinning endurance for the pep talk these do-gooders spill
I’m a believer without advertising, allowing others to live as they will
That night I picked up my Bible and read words I’d surely read before
share the Good news, . . . don’t be ashamed of Me. . . a conviction I couldn’t ignore
Was I really ashamed or just annoyed that I’d been asked to speak out for Him
I’d thought it okay ‘till the day came and I witnessed how praying changed them
People with needs and their souls adrift came starving for words laced with hope
Tears wet her face when my shakey-shy voice said, “God loves you, He’ll help you cope”
The Spirit, I think, must’ve moved me as He prompted words and actions again
Embracing her close I offered, “He forgives, no matter the weight of our sins”
Her yearning eyes peered deep into mine, “Are you sure God could love even me?”
I nodded and smiled still hugging His child--when you ask Him you’ll truly see
A friendship was born--from God it came--between me and this troubled youth
We studied His words, shared them in faith, and in strength still stand for His truths
John 15:16 (NKJV) You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit.
