My brother, Bill, is a very depressed person. His glass has always been half full. He looks at me as if I have grown two heads when I tell him to have faith.
"How can I, when I feel this way? You don't understand, my son is an alcoholic who drinks and takes seven different antidepressants. How can I have any faith in that?" Bill moans.
"You don't. You have faith that God will intervene and help your child. You have faith in something greater than yourself. You get up every morning and know that things will turn around, if only you believe."
"I believe my son is going to overdose on all that alcohol and all those pills, and I will find him dead one day. That's what I believe." My brother, the prophet.
"Do you ever pray, Bill?"
"Every day. But God doesn't answer my prayers."
"Well, maybe that's because you don't believe in miracles. You don't truly believe that God can heal your son. You just don't have faith."
“That’s easy for you to say, sister dear. You’re not in my shoes. Your son is fine.”
“My son is fine today, but he is a police officer. He puts his life on the line every day, and everyday I put his life in God's hands.”
“Well, that doesn’t mean my son isn’t in danger, as well. I’m afraid for him.”
“Do you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, Bill?”
“Well, yeah, I guess. I’m not particularly religious, you know.”
“Bill, what is your favorite holiday?”
“You know it’s Christmas.”
“And, what is Christmas?”
“The birthday of Christ.”
“Well, there you go.” I smile.
I didn’t win that round, but I haven't given up. Bill continues to mope about, and I continue to have faith that God will save my brilliant nephew. I feel it without a shadow of a doubt. Jesus Christ has saved me so many times in my life that I dare not believe otherwise.
Having faith in God is such a beautiful thing. It means I don't worry myself to death anymore. I found faith when I almost lost my life. I found my Lord and Savior when I was dying from cancer, and He healed me and saved my soul. And that wasn’t the first time He was there for me. As I look back, I can see where He’s pulled me out of the fire dozens of time in my wretched life, even before I called Him Savior.
I pray for my brother's son. I believe that God can and will heal this special young man. Did I tell you he has the IQ of a genius? I don't believe God brought this talented and sensitive soul into this world to have him die of an overdose. I have faith that this child will be saved. He will hit bottom and climb back up. That's what I believe.
You just gotta have faith.
