His Voice, though indescribable,
Was straightway recognizable -
Would it be inadvisable,
To run away and hide?
But what He asked? –
Command too great
For prophet old to contemplate,
Rebellious desires dominate,
And with them as his guide
He packed, he ran, he closed the door
On the decree he would ignore,
He turned his back,
Head to the shore,
To leave the safe dockside
And sail deep oceans wide.

With gentle tide, in shallow sea,
A perilous serenity
Lulled him to sleep composedly,
Completely unaware
That as the ship head to the deep,
Dark threatening clouds
Did o’erhead sweep
And stormed the boat,
Whilst he, asleep,
Appeared devoid of care.
The violent winds in furious sigh,
Pitched the slight vessel low and high
And all seemed lost - hear sailors cry:
‘Call to your God in prayer
And save us from despair.’

Awakening, with a sickening start,
Confession poured from wayward heart
Acknowledging his rebel part
With sorrow, grief and tear.
To fearful crew he made his plea
With adamant insistency:
‘Throw me o’erboard’!
In awe they see,
The tempest disappear.
A watery grave?
A prophet’s end?
No, love too great to comprehend
Abundant mercy condescend!
Our God is ever near
And He is quick to hear.

A great fish!
God provided it.
He brought this life up from the pit,
To humbly bow,
Fully submit
Then quickly keep his vow.
And still from darkened grave and sea
He quickly stoops, rescues, sets free
Come quickly, unreservedly,
To hear His voice right now,
Thankfully, gratefully, bow.
