Declared the dog to housemate, cat,
“Today I have decided that
We’ll live up to our reputations
And act according to our stations.
I’ll cuddle in the master’s lap
While you go hide and take a nap.
Tonight I’ll greet him at the door
As you reveal disdain once more.
Just wash your whiskers and your paws.
You’ll have no need to show your claws.
I’ll jump and bark and lick his hand.
You’ll disregard his least command.
Ignore me when I walk your way
And give no sign of your dismay.
Appear aloof, indifferent,
As though you’re giving your consent,
Then arch your back and spit and hiss
When I eat supper from your dish.
We’ll be the worst of enemies—
That’s what he’ll think from what he sees.
And when the master goes to bed,
We’ll laugh at how he’s been misled.
We’ll curl together on his chair
And sleep in comfort all night there.”
