Before the snowstorm hit.
And it was a two hour drive. Sigh…
And then…the awaited news came!
The kids, bundled up from head-to-toe, ran to their awaiting buses; the teachers brought up the rear.
Tiny flakes began their slow descent. I kept to the speed limit and maybe a bit more.
Globby flakes soon took over. No slow about them; they fell onto my windshield and stuck. The wipers moved fast and furious. The few flakes that missed my car found the road. The bit more speed went down to the limit and then way down to minimum and way, way less.
My back stiffened.
My hands both gripped the steering wheel. Tight.
The defroster sang its melody along with my favorite Christian radio station. Both full blast. One to keep my eyes able to focus on the road. The other to keep me from being scared out of my mind.
Slick. Slippery. It was getting.
And then I came across company. The truck tossed out salt like there was no tomorrow, and the way it was coming down and my experience driving on slick roads – odds were pretty good, tomorrow there would not be. For me anyway.
But I did make it. I finally made it to see my grandson. I will give credit to the salt truck. It mucked me up and kept me going at a snail’s pace but I made it and will make up that speed on another day. I am sure of that.
Casey slipped and slupped across the yard before my door was even open. In fact, it wasn’t even turned off yet. The engine, I mean. Of my car. The engine of my car still labored as if it were mucking through snow drifts.
Casey pressed his nose against the window and stared. Impatient.
I put my nose against the window and stared back.
We both crossed our eyes.
If it weren’t for the early out, I’d be at school crossing my t’s and dotting my i’s instead.
I opened my door. “Hey, are you a hitchhiker?”
He scrunched up his nose into his left eye – his thinking look. “A what’er?”
“Get in here!”
“It’s warm, Gramma.”
“Sure is, Buddy. I missed you.”
“Missed you more,” he said as he wrapped his little arms around my neck. Soon he wouldn’t be able to sit on my lap on the driver’s side. Almost couldn’t now. Little squirt’s getting big.
He crawled off and over to the other seat. We both tick-tocked our heads to the tune of the music and the windshield wipers. Surprisingly, both the same speed.
“Gramma, your snow’s dirty on your window.” Casey was the first to break our trance.
“I followed a salt truck, Buddy. It was squirting me with it almost all the way here.”
He got up on his knees, his elbows up on the dash. “Squirting you with what?”
“Salt, Silly. It keeps the roads from getting slickery slippery for your old grandma. I believe God sent the salt truck just in time for me."
“Oh!” Casey cupped his pudgy hands up to mine and whispered a quick preschool prayer, “Thank You Jesus for salt to get Grandma here safe to see me on the slickery slippery roads.”
We both said “Amen!”
I greeted ‘the others’ who knew I really didn’t come through a snowstorm to see them. It was Casey: my heart, my love–my little imp, who made me triumph over that major fear.
We had a glorious weekend, but alas, all good things must end and it was time to say our goodbyes, but instead of being attached to me, Casey was outside. He’s usually clingy when it’s time for me to leave. I went to check it out.
He was humming a tune and shaking something by my tires and then he stood up on his wagon and did the same thing to my windshield.
“Casey.”
I scared him.
The wagon slipped.
He fell into my arms.
His big blue eyes looked up at me. Charmingly.
“What’cha doing?”
“Gramma, you said salt got you here. Won’t pepper keep you here?” He gave me an Eskimo kiss. “I want you to stay forever. Please?”
Ahhh…My Prince Charming.
