Righteously—I hold my head high.
Always—I do the proper thing!
Who knows the law better than I?
He? Who mocks us strict Pharisees,
as lovely temples with dry bones?
I have confidence in myself—
thank God—my worthiness atones!
God knows my pedigree—but him?
Who’s he? Who dares to sit and eat
with tax collectors and sinners—
even prostitutes at his feet?
I abstain from what God forbids!
Who can forgive sins except God?
Yet this blaspheming Nazarene—
dares—on our sacred law to trod!
Even my rival Sadducees
are less contemptible than he;
who comes stirring up the masses,
insulting our rites openly!
He says we will strain out a gnat,
but swallow a camel, what hate—
would cause such a man to bring,
obeying God’s law to debate?
I’m a master in Jewish law—
yet he claims insight beyond me!
How dare he say the things he says?
How expert could this Jesus be!
