Had fallen to the ground;
With awe I gazed upon its color,
With fear, I tiptoed ’round—
Purple streaks adorn this rock;
They seem strangely out of place—
For all I know, I may be staring
Upon an angel’s face!
Could this exotic meteorite
Bring a message from the sky,
Announcing wrath that’s soon to come,
Preparing us to die?
This alien message burns my soul
Like a drop of kryptonite;
How dare I near such holiness?
I’m filthy in God’s sight!
I ran away in horror
Then fell upon my knees,
And begged that I might be remade
So I’m good enough to please.
Here I find a violet hidden,
Her beauty lost within
The grasses of my sightlessness
And the shame of all my sin.
The sister of the meteorite
Is lying ’neath my feet,
And I see now how I misread
The words God tried to speak—
I carry the angel’s face back here,
’Cause it blends in so well—
The messages of love are not
Exotic after all.
