She flies from wall to roof to tree,
She dips, she swoops with outstretched wing,
I watch her flight, I hear her sing
I view my sparrow enviously
And yearn for such a liberty.
I have her company day by day
She hops where I am forced to lay
She feasts on crumbs from passers-by
Lingers a time then off she’ll fly
To take the path, forbidden to me,
My place is at this Gate, only.
How great must be the resting place
Which she can easily embrace
Her unrestricted way is free
For she can nest where I would be.
God’s holy house is barred, I may
Not enter in, so here I lay.
The crowds gather and I’m aware
Its three o’clock, the hour of prayer
I grasp my bowl , I hold it high
‘Alms for the poor’, my daily cry
Rings loud as many step the way
Into the temple courts to pray.
Then two men stop, their piercing gaze
Enters my heart and Peter says
I have no silver, gold but I will
Give you something greater still.
In the name of Jesus Christ the Lord
Rise up my friend, arise and walk.
Effortless, natural and free
I leap and dance in liberty.
With praise to God, the mighty King,
I step, I walk, I dance, I sing.
More free than my small feathered friend,
Blessed more than I could comprehend.
Psalm 84
Acts 3
