Topic: Savory to the Taste (07/26/12)
M'm! M'm! Good!

Two of my favorite things about winter are my mom's homemade vegetable soup and my homemade chili. I can almost taste them, just by closing my eyes and thinking about them.

Imagine that you have been out in the cold all day. Stepping inside, you're greeted by a scrumptious smell. Follow your nose and, to your immense pleasure, you find a huge pot of homemade vegetable soup or homemade chili bubbling merrily on the stove. Lifting the lid, you get a better whiff of the tantalizing aroma wafting in the air. Your eyes grow wide, your mouth starts to water and your stomach rumbles in anticipation.

Even though your mother always told you, “Don't eat out of the pot,” you grab the ladle, give the pot a stir and get ready to taste a little bit of heaven. Don't forget to give it a bit of a blow. If you burn your taste buds on the first bite, you won't be able to enjoy the rest of the bowl.

You hold the first bite in your mouth, chewing slowly to savor the richness of the broth, the spices and the various other yummy ingredients. Warmth spreads through your body as you swallow. Like Lays Potato Chips, you can't eat just one bite, so you grab a spoon, a big bowl, and ladle up a generous helping of happy.

You don't dare gulp it down in a hurry. Food this delicious deserves to be lingered over, and relished bite after savory bite. You eat until you are full. Not that “Oh, my God, I ate too much” full, but a satisfying sensation that evokes feelings of comfort . . . security . . . love . . . home.

Christians are meant to be the salt of the earth. We are called to be “a sweet savor of Jesus Christ unto God.” Like the smell of a savory stew draws us to the bubbling pot, the savor of our Christ-like character is to draw lost men to God.

Their eyes should grow wide with amazement at the difference God makes in our lives. Our testimony to God's mercy and grace should make them hunger and thirst after righteousness. We should encourage them to “taste and see that the Lord is good.”

If we, as Christians, do not lose our savor, the world will be drawn to the Savior and be filled with the Holy Spirit. They will be comforted that they have been delivered from the world, sin and Satan. They will be secure in the knowledge that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ. They will experience the unconditional love of God that allowed Jesus to die for our sins. They will be assured that they will have an eternal home with Jesus in Heaven.

Dear Lord, please let me be the salt and savor that draws the lost to You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

I absolutely agree; there is nothing better than homemade soup in Winter - except when, as I did the other day, it burns to the bottom of the pot. Ohhh, the disappointment.

Anyway, I truly loved this devotional. You started with a great title that made me want to read, and your descriptions were strong; I now want to to and make some (unburnt!) soup!

The scripture verse is perfect for this topic and you brought it in smoothly and beautifully. Well done on a great devotion.

Well-written devotional that fits nicely with the topic. You made me hungry for the soup and chili, and you also made me hungry to be a savory Christian in this world where so many are starving for Truth.

I like the description of your mother's vegetable soup and homemade chili that made your mouth water just thinking about it. I also like the analogy you made to Christians and how they must savor the Saviour and taste and see that the Lord is good. The use of scripture here gave the reader the idea of delight in eating as we get delight in knowing our Lord.
