(Luke 12:13-21. Luke 19:1-10)
On one mellow autumn evening,
Under a golden eastern sky,
Two friends sat in contemplation,
Talking of the days gone by.
Childhood days, and reminiscence
Springtime zest and youthful green,
Teenage dreams and aspirations,
Wealth and riches, then unseen.
Passing years of springs and summers
Autumns, winters, heat and cold,
Successful bounty in abundance
Had come to these two friends of old.
Tanned and bronzed by outdoor living,
Toiling, tilling, fertile soil,
One recalled with pride his harvest
Overflowing from his toil.
‘ My meagre sheds are insufficient,
Let me tell you what I’ll do,
I’ll substitute with bigger, larger
Stores and barns to see me through.’
‘And then I’ll rest in my retirement,
Eat and drink, do as I please,
Take life easy, I deserve it,
Put my feet up, be at ease.’
A cloud of troubled contemplation
Lined his friend’s deep furrowed brow:
‘I used to echo just your thinking
But now I’ve changed, I’ll tell you how:’
‘I’ve met a man, His name is Jesus,
He’s changed my life, He’s saved my soul,
He’s blessed me with His full Salvation,
Forgiven my sin and made me whole.’
‘I was a thief, I gained my riches
From a life of wrongful gain,
But now I know God’s full forgiveness
And truly, I’ve been born again.’
Zaccheus watched the upright figure
Of his friend who walked away,
Unprepared to even listen
To the words he had to say.
On one autumn sunny morning,
Under an eastern sky, azure.
One man sat in contemplation,
Weeping for a friend no more.
