"I know you've used the weak for Your glory, and I know you have used signs to show Your promises. So Lord, I ask you for a sign."
Linda got up to retrieve her Bible and knelt by the bed.
"To Noah you gave the covenant of the rainbow and to Gideon you gave the sign of the fleece.
"So Lord, if You will forgive me for asking, I'd like a sign that Carter is with You. I know He professed belief in you as a child, but these past few years have been hard, and have tested me as a parent. The rebellion, the drinking, staying out late... I don't even remember the last time he went to church with us. I still have that hope that maybe he was just testing us, and that he still believed, but I just don't know, Lord."
The next day Linda tried to make it through another day without her son. She got out the photo albums and sat with her husband as they recalled all the good times with Carter.
"Look, honey. It's his first Cardinals game." Carter was only a few months old in the picture. That first game grew into many games, and Carter was such a fan of the team that his nickname was 'Cards.'
Linda looked up from the photo album and looked out the window. "Daniel, look over there. It's a cardinal just standing out in the yard, right by Carter's bedroom window. Have you ever seen a cardinal that red before?"
"No... I don't believe I have," Daniel said.
"I... I asked God for a sign. I think He might have sent one."
The next day, another cardinal appeared in the yard. Every day there seemed to be a cardinal, always in the same place.
"Daniel, this was the first day we didn't see a cardinal in the yard. How long has it been?"
"About two weeks, I think... maybe a little bit more."
"You don't think..." Linda got up to look at the calendar and counted the days since the cardinal had first appeared. "Sixteen days. One for every year of Carter's life."
Overcome with emotion, Linda went to her room to be alone. Holding her Bible to her chest, she cried out to God again. "Thank you, Lord, for you have given me a rare and wonderful glimpse of Your glory."
