Times spent together just because,
Remember when you called me “Twit”
When in my teens, I’d baby-sit.
One time you changed my hair to brown
Then tried to ease away mom’s frown,
You coached me as I birthed my son--
In following years you called "us" done.
Can you forgive my selfish past
That gained me nothing that would last.
Today I know too well the cost--
You’ve won the heart I fear I’ve lost.
The older sister’s eyes grew moist
Forgiveness, compassion--the godly choice,
But anchored hurts churned doubts and fears
And kept her judging those sad years.
She doesn’t know the woman who
Has grown up strong because of You,
She hasn’t shared in my successes
Because she dwelled just on my messes.
Agonizing silence draped the room
Till grace-filled words cast sweet perfume.
God’s righteousness on them rested,
Prayers on their behalf invested.
Through the dreaded confrontation
Sisters offered explanations,
The whys and hows, the should-have-beens--
The ripple effect of cradled sins.
I, his mom--you, his aunt
Who said “I will” when I said “can’t”.
To you forever I’m indebted,
My choices I have long regretted.
A shared son’s love, a blessed gift
They capture time they’ve sorely missed,
Finally now with hurts released
Two sisters find God’s kind of peace.
