Or shadows upon walls
Like echoes on hillsides
Or scents in the air.
Tales swirl around him -
Enigmas wary of the snare.
The writer, the huntsman,
Unwitting prey to what he is heir.
Witness to flames without tinder
Forms without substance
Songs without music
Flurries without cause.
Words swirl around him -
Visions wary of the snare.
The writer, the huntsman,
Unwitting prey to what he is heir.
Like phantoms, they haunt him
Like specters they assail
Like sirens they beckon
Like tempters they beguile.
Tales swirl around him -
Spirits wary of the snare.
The writer, the huntsman,
Unwitting prey to what he is heir.
He picks up the ashes
Of life’s reflected burnings
Cold upon its hearth bed
Remembered by its mirrored flame.
Words swirl around him -
Musings wary of the snare.
The writer, the huntsman,
Unwitting prey to what he is heir.
He grasps in the darkness
To find nothing is there
Shadows without substance
Nothing, nothing is there.
Tales swirl around him –
Allusions wary of the snare.
The writer, the huntsman,
Captive prey to what he is heir.
