Topic: Ow! (01/07/10)
Down in the depths of the blue, blue sea
Hidden from the sun's bright rays.
Members of the oyster community,
Living in close proximity,
Happily spent their days.

Now Ollie Junior blissful lay,
He suffered not one whit.
But that all altered on the day
That irritation forced its way
By one small piece of grit.

Between his mantle and his shell,
The grit lay deep embedded.
How it got there he could not tell,
But Ollie realised very well
He and the grit were 'wedded'!

Oh how that stone did interfere,
Young Ollie wondered how
His suffering could be so severe,
This small invader cost him dear,
But all he said was "Ow"!

Old Ollie Senior quietly clung
To rocks where waters swirled.
He sympathised with Ollie young
Whose time of suffering had begun
In their under-water world.

He offered gentle words so wise
That sought the pain to stem:
"Be patient dear, you'll win the prize,
The grit that you now so despise
Will one day be a gem."

The youngster said: "How can this be?
A gem? Ow, its a scourge."
His senior answered thoughtfully
"Just give it time and you may see
A priceless pearl emerge."

"Each time you feel like crying "Ow"!
If tempted to give in,
Cover the grit - Yes - start right now.
I've found this true, and have somehow
A growing pearl within."

Young Ollie listened carefully
And started work straightway.
Year after year, amazedly,
There grew a pearl of rarity,
A beautiful display.

A priceless gem, admired by all
Which drew a breathless "Wow"!
Pure loveliness which did enthrall
Tho' origin, you may recall,
All started with an "Ow"!

Lord, grant me the wisdom to turn my OW's into gems to lay at your feet.

This is wonderful! I love the allegory to the "ows" in our lives and how the Lord can slowly build those hurts into a beautiful, priceless pearl of great beauty!

You did a fantastic job on this "unusual in poetic form" poem. I'm so impressed with your whole creative story, and I love the tie-in to scripture, "pearl of great price". Wonderful work!!

Margaret, I can't imagine how this wonderful poem slipped by me some time ago. It's truly unique and beautiful. Your word choices intrigue me but the spiritual applications are endless and meaningful. Since I first read some of your work in the spring, you are fast becoming one of my favorite writers on FW and this dear poem is part of the reason why!
