into the woods beckons to me:
“Come and explore;
find the treasures
I have waiting for you.”
Like Alice, I enter a world of wonders--
A world of mystery and shadows
where giants reign,
their lithe brown limbs
adorned with green hair;
brightly colored fungi, like
fairy sprites, dance upon
old rotting logs and build castles
on the earthen floor;
the only sound the drone and
hum of a myriad invisible voices.
An old dirt path meandering
into the woods beckons to me:
“Come and explore;
find the treasures
I have waiting for you.”
Like Alice, I enter a world of wonders--
Like a queen, I enter a magnificent
castle of gold and ochre
brilliant in the sun’s rays;
in honor of my presence
the trees have laid down a
rich and aromatic tapestry in hues of
mahogany, chestnut, and russet
that crunch and swish
beneath my feet, the
castle busy with workers
gathering their nut-brown treasures.
An old dirt path meandering
into the woods beckons to me:
“Come and explore;
find the treasures
I have waiting for you.”
Like Alice, I enter a world of wonders--
In a winter wonderland,
the path is now a pristine white
bordered by silent sentinels
of sepia and umber,
stark and lovely statues
against a glistening white background;
here and there tiny
footprints cross my path
evidence of other travelers in
this winter wonderland.
An old dirt path meandering
into the woods beckons to me:
“Come and explore;
find the treasures
I have waiting for you.”
Like Alice, I enter a world of wonders--
A celebration of life!
The sentinels, their winter
frosting melted away, become
brown candles aglow with a
faint yellow-green light
upon a chocolate birthday cake
decorated with white, pink, and
lavender sprinkles;
a tawny doe and her
white-speckled fawn
bound across my path,
fleet-footed wood nymphs come
to join the party.
An old dirt path meandering
into the woods beckons to me:
“Come and explore;
find the treasures
I have waiting for you.”
Like Alice, I enter a world of wonders.
