"Brown is not ugly," Emily countered.
I was shocked to learn that my best friend's color was brown. After all these years of knowing her. I would have though she had better sense than that. "Okay, fine," I replied. "Maybe 'ugly' is going a bit far. But it's certainly not pretty."
"I knew it! You hate my hair," Emily exclaimed, dissolving into a pool of fake tears.
I rolled my eyes. "You know that's not what I mean. Brown is a beautiful color for hair, eyes, and skin. But I just don't see how it can be your favorite color. It's so... so... Well, I don't know what. It's... uninspiring," I finally stated, choosing my words carefully.
"I beg to differ."
"But... brown's the color of dirt."
"Which reminds me of the beautiful trees that God has created."
"And it's the color of bugs."
"Which remind me of the beautiful butterflies and ladybugs."
"It's the color of worms."
"Worms remind me of fishing, which reminds me of the ocean and all the ocean creatures."
"Brown's the color of... of..." I couldn't bring myself to say the word. I was a civilized adult, after all. Finally I whispered the word in her ear, giggling like a school girl.
"Oh, come on. I'll say it out loud. Poop. There. I said it. And it reminds me that I have indoor pluming."
"What about mud?" I was just trying to test her now, to see what other "inspirations" she could come up with for the color brown.
"Mud reminds me of summer storms that water the crops and give us food."
"Spiders." I was going for rapid-fire now.
"Their webs remind me of the intricacy of God's handiwork."
And just as quickly as that, I was running out of ammo. "Um.... a grizzly bear as it's about to devour you."
"Teddy bears."
She was catching on to my rapid-fire game.
"Dead flowers."
"Live ones."
"What about caskets?"
"They remind me of the joy of heaven and the hope of eternal life."
"Tarantulas."
"The... the... I think you may have gotten me there," Emily stammered.
I pumped my fists in mock celebration.
"Brown is the color of many good things too, though," Emily stated. "Chocolate."
"Dark chocolate," I replied.
"Bunny rabbits."
"Puppies."
"You're catching on pretty quickly," Emily said.
"Yep. And you're right. Brown is a very inspiring color. After all..." I pulled out the Sunday School visual that had started our conversation of colors in the first place. We both broke into song.
Red, brown, yellow, black, and white,
We are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world!

Do people really talk like this? And there was one place where I lost track of the speakers (toward the middle), and one girl seemed to say what the other girl would have.
The girls' relationship is fun and endearing.
