What for? How come? When’s later?
Answers fall with abandon from mother’s tongue,
Just because. I’m your mom. In a minute.
But seasons glide by and toddles turn run,
My commands and directions metamorphose,
Clinging loosens and kisses receive but a shun,
Spare moments cause maternal ponders.
First anxious venom taints my flow of thought,
Keep safe? Stay close? Look both ways?
A heart dealt with only as the Spirit taught,
Cast my cares and my bairns onto Him.
Still the questions strain at seam of my soul,
Can they see? Feel? Depth infinite.
Love that swells more constant that tidals roll,
All forgiving, ever answer growth’s grills.
They ask, not intrusive but reaching for response…
Can I do it?
Try darling, you’ll do anything at all.
Will I be safe?
Right beside, I will shelter you from harm.
Do they like me?
Yes my sweet, you are caring and lovely.
Will you leave me?
Never dear, not while breath fills my lungs.
Am I worthy?
God Himself agrees indeed that you are.
…And replies caress where lips, arms cannot.
My work is to soothe, nuture, feed and clothe,
Is that all? There’s much more invested.
Firm foundation for a whirling and searching child,
Give strength Lord and faith, faith unending.
