And all the shrubs are pruned and trim,
Theirs is a very pleasant street,
Where everything’s precise and meet
A suburb, proper, proud and prim.
The cars are gleaming in the light
All glistening in showroom glint
Their stainless parts all burnished bright
Not a slight defect in sight—
Long hours of loving labour spent.
No evidence of slothfulness,
To worldly eyes there’s nought awry
But hearts can be a wilderness
Though outward visuals impress
For time and things and life pass by.
There is a way that man deems right
But it’s a way of total loss—
Accumulated things delight
And God and truth pushed out of sight—
Sloth of spirit’s awful cost.
We must seek His Kingdom first
And we must seek His righteousness;
But fallen man has things reversed
In flesh pursuits his soul’s immersed—
The life he has is lifelessness.
The sloth of flesh is clearly seen
In unkempt ways and laziness,
But far, far worse the soul unclean
Which by appearances might seem
To live a life of great success.
God’s Spirit will not always strive
With man who is but flesh and blood—
Through Christ, man must be made alive
Though Hell and devil might contrive
To stop this truth being understood.
