He reviewed his personal financial portfolio. “My money isn’t growing as fast as it could,” he thought to himself. “I know what I will do. I will move my money into more aggressive funds.” He researched options for several days and increased his threshold for risk. He considered all the possibilities until he finally found the best ways to invest his money to reap the greatest profits.
It took Greg several evenings to switch around accounts and reconfigure his fortune into bigger and more lucrative funds. When he was done, he said to himself, “Now I should have plenty of money to last me for years. I can rest easy, relaxing and enjoying myself, partying and buying whatever I want.”
The next day on his usual route to work, Greg walked by the same storefront church that he always passed on his way to the office. There were the same panhandlers sitting on the stoop of the church, and the same bright colored banners declaring quaint sayings that struck Greg as odd, even annoying.
He often didn’t even read the banners, but sometimes he couldn’t help it. They screamed messages so foreign to him that they were almost intriguing… almost.
As Greg hurried past the church this morning, it was as if an invisible hand touched his shoulder. He looked up to see who had stopped him, and caught his breath as he read the new banner for the week: “This night your soul is required of you. Do not store up treasures for yourself; be rich toward God.”
Greg stood riveted to the sidewalk, unable to move. He took a deep breath and the spell was broken. He hurried on, bothered and perplexed, and unsure why. Perhaps the feeling would pass.
But what if it didn’t?
