“Don’t call me Half-pint, Grandpa! I’m not a little kid!”
“Hmm. Sounds like someone isn’t happy today. What’s the trouble?”
Charlene was a petite little girl, and she usually loved her grandpa’s special nickname. But not today.
“Daddy took the boys fishin’ and they said I was too little to go and besides I’m just a girl!”
“Well, they sure didn’t know your great Aunt Edith! She caught more fish than the rest of us kids put together. Never could figure out why those fish loved your Aunt Edith so much. Tell you what Charlene – why don’t you and me go fishin’ and see what we can catch.”
“Okay Grandpa!” Like a small whirlwind, the child ran home to “tell Mama”.
Grandpa took Charlene to his favorite fishing hole and set her up with a pole. He showed her how to bait the hook and how to throw the line out. To his surprise, she got a bite almost immediately.
“Well glory be! I think you take after your Aunt Edith!” At first he had to help reel the fish in, but by the fourth catch, Charlene was doing it herself, bracing her little body against a tree on the riverbank.
Just after noon she had six nice trout in her pail and her grandpa had three. Grandpa showed her how to clean the fish, too.
“Yuck! Do I have to learn this part?”
“Absolutely! It wouldn’t be fair to those fish if you didn’t make use of 'em. We'll clean ‘em and filet 'em and then you can help your Mama cook ‘em. How’s that?”
Later that day, Dad and the boys came home to find Charlene up on a chair dipping her fish into egg and then into flour ready for Mama to fry up.
“Hey darlin’!” Daddy said to Mama. “I’m sure glad you bought those fish ‘cause we got skunked today!”
“Oh, I didn’t buy them. Charlene and Grandpa went fishing today.”
“So grandpa let us keep all these?”
“Oh, these are Charlene’s fish. Grandpa took the three he caught over home so grandma could cook them. My Dad says Charlene’s a natural. “
The aroma of the frying fish made Charlene’s nose twitch with pleasure. They sure smelled good! She smiled just a little bit when she saw the look of disbelief on her brothers’ faces. But they dug in and ate the fish just the same.
“Umm! Umm!” Daddy said. “There’s nothing as good as fresh-caught fish!”
