I wrote of the unsurpassed beauty I saw in you, comparing it to sunsets, celestial bodies, heavenly visions and oceans of love. I wrote of your immeasurable compassionate spirit, telling of how you could save the world all by yourself if we all could just draw from your well of tenderness. I told of your ability to light up the lives of everyone you knew, and how nobody ever left your presence feeling down. Most amazing was your love for a wretch like me, undeserving of the tremendous gift God had given me.
Now, twenty years later, I sit down to write for you again. I look at your weary, but still beautiful, face and know how tired and exhausted you are from this life we lead. Four kids who sometimes drive you to distraction. Five jobs between the two of us, just trying to make ends meet. A ministry at church that we both love, but sometimes stresses us to the ultimate limits. It seems we are both always either coming or going, rarely in the same room at the same time anymore. Fatigue is the wardrobe you dress from every morning.
Somehow you always find the strength to carry on – no matter what life throws your way. Migraine headaches? They lay you up, but I’ve seen you drag yourself out of a near painkiller-induced coma to get to a ministry meeting. Bills? Get serious. That’s been a problem for far too long to even cause you to slow down anymore. Fighting kids? This one gets you down I know – crushing your spirit – but then one of those little crumbsnatchers says or does something beautiful that touches your heart in all the right places, and I see a rejuvenation of your spirit.
Life has thrown a lot at us, too much to write of here, and through it all you’ve never changed. So, now, once again, I’ll take up my pen and write of your surpassing beauty; your immeasurable spirit; your eternal light; and your inexplicable love.
Only this time I will write not of sunsets or far off stars and galaxies. Rather, I will write of the things I learned from twenty years with the woman God meant for me. Drawing from our shared collection of beauty.
You are beautiful like the first smile we ever saw on our newborn’s face. When it happened for the first time it was a drop-whatever-you’re holding moment that is etched in our mind’s eye forever. When you smile at me, and your face lights up like only yours can - well, whether you know it or not, each one of those is permanently etched in my mind forever as well.
You are compassionate like Jesus. It’s all I can compare it too. When I see people in chaos, whose lives are turned upside down, come away from you with a measure of peace, I know it is your relationship with Him that enables you to share that priceless gift. I am humbled by your capacity for love.
You are uplifting, as I have seen no other in my life. People come away from you again and again buoyed by your spirit and tenderness. You have a way of making each person feel vital and important, even when they doubt it themselves. You are a healing salve to those who have been cut to the core.
Your inexplicable love for me? It’s still a mystery after all of these years, but undeniable just the same. You have stood by me through job changes, life changes, and all of our ups and downs (both ones caused and not caused by me). After all of this time, and all of our dreams that have passed underneath us like water flowing downstream, you still smile that smile that’s just for me. I still take a mental picture of every one, saving it for rainy days.
If my joy with you is how prosperity is measured, and I have to believe it’s so, then I am, without a doubt, the most prosperous man I know.
