“You have a strong son, Amram.” Puah’s joy melted into sadness as she realized the implication of this fact.
He knelt next to his wife’s bed. “Thank you for giving me another son.” He tried not to look at the child.
Jochebed looked from one to the other. “What is wrong with the two of you?”
“You know of Pharaoh’s decree. At first he just asked us to kill the male children and we could prevent it, but now his soldiers…The river runs red with the blood of our children,” Puah said.
“Don’t worry my husband. I prayed over this child every day he was in my womb. Our Lord will protect him.” She handed the child to Amram.
“How?” he asked.
“I have been out of sight for many months because I was with child. I can continue to hide with our son and Miriam will help me care for him.”
“What about Puah? Pharaoh’s men might see her leave.” He handed the child back to his wife.
Puah covered her head with a shawl. “I will wait for cover of darkness. Our Lord will hide me.”
Three months passed and the boy child grew healthy and strong. People started asking questions about Amram’s wife and wondered if she was ill. Despite their best efforts, they could keep his presence a secret no longer.
Jochebed cradled her sleeping child. She kissed his forehead. “Lord, please don’t take my child’s life now that my husband has dared to love him and gaze upon his face. Help me, I pray You, to save him.”
“What is wrong, Momma?” Miriam watched from the doorway.
She dried her eyes. “The number of soldiers in our midst has increased. Your brother is not safe here anymore.”
Miriam knelt next to her mother. “What can we do?”
“Go my daughter and bring me some papyrus. I need to make a basket.”
Nightly, she toiled by candlelight until it was finished. She sealed her creation with tar and pitch mingled with tears. Her husband sat close by keeping vigil.
“I am finished Amram.”
“Let us wait a few days more…for the children.”
At the end of the week, Jochebed woke Miriam just after sunrise.
“It is time to go to the river.”
Careful not to be seen, they walked towards the Nile. Not a word passed between them. Her son rested peacefully in the basket, unaware that his life was about to change.
She chose a spot where the water’s edge was hidden by bulrushes.
“I love you with an everlasting love my son. Today God has saved you, but I must let you go. His watchful eye will guide you now.” She memorized every inch of his face.
Tears fell like raindrops onto his cheeks, but he did not wake. Miriam bent down and kissed his eyelids.
“You will always be in my heart my brother.”
Jochebed eased the small basket into the water. It floated downstream a ways and stopped in another dense patch of reeds. She stood up. Miriam did not follow, but stayed behind to keep an eye out for a time. The infant boy’s mother took her time returning home, but never looked back.
