Now, as an adult with superspeed, I don’t need those sci-fi cars and butlers. I can clean my house in less than sixty seconds. Maybe ninety if I want to do extra cleaning because I'm expecting company.
In any event, I had just given my house a thorough cleaning because my mother was coming over for dinner. Admittedly it;s cheaper than taking her out to eat, but with my metabolism, I need to save money where I can.
My mom texted me that she’d be arriving in about five minutes. I sat down to catch my breath and eat a quick snack so I wouldn’t be eating like a pig during dinner. Mom doesn’t know her daughter is a superhero, and I expect it’s better if she doesn’t know.
I had just polished off a whole bag of chips when the police scanner I keep in my purse squawked. I listened to the officer report that two super villainesses were fighting at a local jewelry store. The villains were Lady Freeze and the Purple Flame, nobody that the Speedster hadn’t handled before, so I expected I could just run over there and wrap the two crooks up for the cops, and make it back before mother arrived.
When I arrived on the scene, I saw the pyrokinetic staring down the cryokinetic. I rushed in between them and in my best ‘superhero" voice ordered them to, “Surrender!” Then to show that I wasn’t joking around I scowled at them and added, ”My mother is expected at my place any minute, so I don’t have time to play patty-cake with the two of you.”
Lady Freeze looked past me and spoke to the Purple Flame. “You know, if we work together, we can make her late!”
Flame didn’t respond verbally, she just used her powers to shoot a blast of fire at my face. I dodged, as expected, right into Freeze’s cold blast. I fell, covered in ice from my cowl to my boots. While the ice job slowed me down a bit, I was still able to vibrate the ice off my body and move.
My cell phone buzzed, but I didn’t have time to look at the text message. Besides, I was already in motion, knocking Freeze straight to la la land. Next I turned to face the Purple Flame, a comparatively rookie member of my rogues gallery
Flame chuckled as I turned my attention towards her. “Just as we expected when we planned this job in prison. We expected you’d knock one of us out and the other would deal with you.”
Flame rose into the air, keeping her fire away from the sprinkler system. I didn’t have enough room to race around her to create a downdraft, so how could I bring her down to the ground where I could punch her fiery lights out? She also knew that the area was limited, because she laughed and said, “Can’t catch me, and Lady Freeze is waking up. We’re going to beat you so bad...”
Her voice cut off as I dashed to Lady Freeze, whose unique body needs warmth to survive. I counted on her body’s natural reaction to being near a heat source as I lifted Freeze towards Flame. As Freeze drew off Flame’s heat, the purple costumed crook fell directly on Freeze. I separated them so Freeze wouldn’t drain all of Flame’s body heat from her and wake up at full strength.
The police had arrived during the fight and had not interfered. I raced to the nearest officers and asked sweetly, “Mind if I borrow your cuffs?”
With the startled looks on their faces I didn’t expect an answer, so I just borrowed them anyway, and a moment later deposited the two would-be robbers at their feet. The ranking officer smiled and said, “Thanks again Speedster.”
I normally would have responded with at least a ‘You’re welcome’, but after I cuffed Freeze and Flame, I checked my text messages. Mom had beaten traffic and was knocking at my front door.
