Last night I discovered a new power through singing. Maddy and I were invited by some relatives to join them as they were going somewhere. I was so happy to be included, being only four usually meant I had to stay behind.
However, this was no ordinary group gathering. There were a lot of adults, and they dressed in a way I couldn’t see their faces. It was very strange and confusing. Finally, after listening very carefully, I recognized some people by their voices and gleefully pronounced, “Oh, I know who you are.” Everyone went strangely silent, and someone quickly escorted me some distance away from the group. I guess they weren’t too happy about my knowing who they were.
Eventually, a couple of adults who I didn’t know came and spoke to me about family and love. They asked me, “Do you love your sister?”
“Yes,” I answered.
They then asked, “Do you love her enough to feel pain, so she wouldn’t have to?”
Again, I answered, “Yes.”
Finally, they asked, “Do you love her enough to die for her?”
“Yes, I love her with all my heart,” I answered.
Then I was led into another room. Some robed figure picked me up and placed me on top of a table. At first, I just quietly stood there for a time, and then I had to lay down. That was when the pains began. I bore it as best I could, but I couldn’t help myself. Sometimes I whimpered, sometimes I cried, and sometimes I screamed. Finally, the torment ended, and someone carried me outside and put something over my mouth.
When they placed me in the hole someone had dug in the ground, they twisted my arms and legs into an unnatural position and proceeded to bury me. The dirt was so heavy that my arms and legs were powerless. However, they did not bury my head. Then one by one each of them left, and I was alone in the dark like never before.
I began to cry and quickly discovered I couldn’t breathe well through my mouth or my nose. So, I had to make myself stop crying. I looked up into the night sky and saw the stars. These were the stars which God had made. I began to hum. I hummed “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Then I thought about Jesus and began to hum “Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so. Little ones on him believe, they are weak, but he is strong.” My heart and mind were singing away. No human could hear the words, but I knew God did.
I was so thankful to know that my Heavenly Father could hear me and also see exactly where I was there in the earth. It was then I felt something new, unlike anything I had ever felt before. God gently came to me. I wasn’t scared or even crying. I felt Him right there in the dirt with me. It was the best feeling, even better than my parents’ arms. I serenely drifted off to sleep just like I did most nights in my bed.
Eventually, someone came back for me and woke me up. The sky was not as black. It was more of a dark blue color, and the stars were quite faint. I knew the sun would be up soon. I began to shiver uncontrollably and to smile also. The person carrying me looked startled and asked, “What are you smiling about?” I quietly sang, “Jesus loves me this I know.”
