I admit my first concern was for my vehicle. I checked and other than a minor scrape on the bumper, not a big deal, there was no visible damage. After completing my inspection, I then focused my attention on the driver of the other vehicle. One quick look was all I needed to know that this woman was having a very bad day and that this was not unique in her life. She apologized profusely and admitted that she had been distracted by the extreme busyness of her day. She looked like a woman who was beaten down by life and was expecting me to continue the barrage. She was at my mercy and I had the opportunity to take advantage of her weakness for my own gain.
I knew though, as a follower of Jesus, that there was another way. I was aware at that moment how much mercy I had been shown and that the heart of God was to show compassion and not judgment on this woman. I quickly assured her that the damage was inconsequential and that I had no intention of using the incident for my own gain. Her body language immediately went from one of tension to one of relief. She was amazed that I was willing to let the issue go. I even had an opportunity to pray for her and encourage her in her life. In choosing a different path, I opened up a path of encouragement and life rather than judgment and death.
I left that moment uniquely encouraged myself. Though the incident is considered an accident, it was a God-given opportunity for me to show the love and mercy of God to one who needed it so very badly. I was strengthened in my faith, the woman came away encouraged, and God was given praise as I have continued to share this incident to others. Accidents are a part of life, but with God in the midst they can be so much more.
