“Did you really think that I would let you go that easy?” he growled.
She shuddered and pushed deeper into the shadows. The sound of her ragged breathing echoed off the walls.
“Just leave me alone!” she cried.
“I know where you are Jessica. Crouching in that corner like a frightened animal. It doesn’t have to be this way. Come back to me, and I will forget your little indiscretion.”
“I don’t want to be with you anymore!” she shouted. “I have chosen a different life.”
“After all I have given to you, you’re leaving me?"
“Yes” she whispered.
“I control all the wealth of the world Jessica. I can give you anything you want. Anything you desire. And, I know what pleases you.”
Her mind began to swim.
“Look at yourself Jessie. Those rags just don’t befit you. Remember the beautiful clothes and jewels I dressed you in? Think back to how you felt when you looked like a princess.”
“I remember what I had to do to get those clothes. It’s not clothes or jewels that make me a princess; it’s who I am on the inside. It’s whose I am,” she said trying to convince herself.
“And where is your new love, Jessie? Why isn’t he here protecting you? Didn’t he say he would never leave you?”
“You’re just trying to confuse me!”
“No I’m not. Just pointing out what seems to be obvious. You poor thing. You are so stressed. I can give you something for that. You used to say these pills made life worth living.”
“I was wrong. I can’t take those anymore. I don’t need to take them. I don’t want to take them.”
“Yes you do Jess. I can see it in your eyes. The pills are calling you and you want them to take this pain away.”
“No! I won’t get caught up in that again.”
“OK, OK, fine. They are here if you change your mind. I can’t believe you’re leaving me after everything I freely gave you. I didn’t have to Jess, I chose to, and look how you are repaying me.”
“The things you gave me were never free. Everything had strings attached. Before I knew it you had me bound and gagged. You controlled me.”
“I’m hurt” he said. Didn’t I teach you better than that? You are master of your own life. No one can control you, unless you want to be controlled. Is that how you like it Jessie? You like being controlled by your new love?”
“That’s enough!”
Jessica stood and walked toward the sound of his voice.
“He doesn’t control me. He has given me freedom and life which is what you promised and could never deliver. All your gifts, clothes, jewels and drugs never gave me freedom or made me happy. It was all a lie.”
“And the way you are living now makes you happy?” the chill in his voice stopped her in her tracks.
“Yes” she said quietly. “Yes, I am happier” her voice now confident. “In fact, now that I think about it, I haven’t ever felt this free. Since I escaped from your clutches to his loving arms I truly am happy.”
“What has he ever given you to make you happy” he growled. Your beautiful clothes and possessions are gone. You live like a pauper. You have forsaken my riches for your rags. You are nothing without me!”
“That’s where you are wrong Satan. I am a child of the King and He has given me life, both now and forever. I have given up your rags for His riches. Be gone from me. You don’t have authority over me anymore.”
“You haven’t heard the last from me Jessica. We will speak again.”
“Maybe we will, but I’m not worried. I read the end of the book. I already know that my God and I are on the winning team.”
