We eat, but that in itself is not the complete need. It matters what we eat.
Bread, with its long chain carbohydrates and nutritional value is a necessity, but the bread from which the good stuff has been extracted is not the best choice.
The Bible calls God's Word the "Bread of our spiritual life." The Bible calls bread the "staff" of our physical life.
Bread is important to us both as the wheat product for the physical body, and the Bible, the Word of God, as the bread for our spiritual life.
It is important in both cases that the bread be whole and not bleached of the nutritional value it contains in pure form.
Ultimately our physical condition is directly affected by our spiritual condition.
Therefore, if when we read the Word, the Bible, and ingest and digest only the parts we like, leaving out that which is undesirable to us, then in equivalency we have removed some of the spiritual nutrition and we will not be spiritually strong.
Likewise water is the most urgent element for our body and it matters that the water we drink is pure and clean.
If the water we drink is polluted, by germs or chemicals, then we can quickly become physically ill.
In equivalency, if the "Water of the Word" has been polluted with doctrines that actually violate God's Laws of purity and right living, then we become spiritually ill.
There is a famine of the "whole Bread" in the Church of today. Many persons are led to drink of water that is defiled.
When about 80% of all those standing in the pulpit to deliver God's message are up to their eyeballs in personal sins of sexuality, you can know that they are not delivering messages that educate parishioners to the one sin that is done against their own body. I Cor. 6:18
It becomes obvious that those ministers do not really believe the texts of Scripture wherein God states what He will do to those who pervert His Word, The Bread of Life, The Living Water.
For years the Churches of America have fallen to one extreme or the other; some are preaching only Hell fire and damnation; others are preaching only the gooey love of God.
The truth is that both are correct but neither is complete.
The Bread of the Word must be mixed with appropriate amounts of the complete Word and presented to the hearers in a way that educates them to recognize which actions are pleasing to God and which actions are not pleasing to God. The message should simultaneously convey to the hearers that God loves them and He desires them to make good and wise choices about all the activities in which they engage.
The Bible informs us about good behaviors and bad behaviors and none of them are relevant to the culture or to our geographical location. That is the reason that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is adaptable to all cultures.
His instructions are written in the hearts of all mankind so that God's commands alter only the unloving, unkind and unjust ways that we, as humankind, behave toward God, human beings, and animals.
Despite this fact, too many preachers and teachers are mixing into the Bread of Life and The Water of the Word, products of the sinful culture around us; OR they are failing to call SIN "sin" so that the little sheep of the congregation fail to thrive spiritually, many are never born; because the pure Truth of the Word was never sown upon the soil of their minds.
We do not hear from our pulpits sermons that identify the sinful practices of our culture because of political correctness, good manners we say.
If we speak at all of a sin, we hint to homosexuality; but God says also adultery between a man and a woman is sin. We have incest in the homes, sex slavery in our Nation, the bitter results of gossiping and slander, outright robbery and stealing with a pen, along with a long list of other injustices.
What is our experience in spiritual equivalency? We go to the table of the Word and receive what we like and reject what we do not like. We call it "not for our present day."
Many are spiritually malnourished, by choice. That is not a good choice.
