Long ago, on my first trip on a plane,
I was excited about what I would see.
While looking outside through the double paned glass,
An epiphany came over me.
I imagined how a bird must feel,
As we sailed over streams and ditches.
The plane rose higher, and broadened my view,
Patchwork land with eroded stitches.
My thirst for flight has never been quenched,
A familiar plot as I sleep.
As I drive off a cliff, I don’t fall, but I fly!
I can see whales in the oceans deep.
Once I dreamed about tornados,
So I flew to survey the land.
From high above, I watched a twister drop down,
Then swept with the Master’s hand.
Another time, I was lost and alone.
I didn’t know how to find my way.
So I raised myself up to see landmarks and streets.
I knew everything would be okay.
Some dreams in flight have been quite scary,
Like giant waves crashing onto a shore.
There were times I saw devastation and drought.
I didn’t want to fly anymore.
Can we imagine, with our finite minds,
What our Heavenly Father must see?
From the greatest of heights, and His point of view,
How discouraging it must be.
Thank God, He’s God! And it isn’t me,
For I think I would have to quit.
I’d rather see beauty, but He sees it all,
And loves us, in spite of it.
Things would get messy if we were in charge,
Confronting the ugly, face to face.
That’s why we’re down here, and He’s way up there,
Protecting, and showing us grace.
